Role of a Medical Representative (M.R.)
The role of a Medical Representative (M.R.) is that of a salesperson who sells the company's products by promoting them to doctors and convincing them to prescribe the same. The M.R. is responsible for overseeing sales promotion activities in their territory and achieving the business targets set for that area.
Role of an Area Sales Manager (ASM)
An ASM is typically an individual who has spent 3-4 years as an M.R. and has been promoted to supervise 4-5 M.R.s. Their role involves training, guiding, coaching, motivating, and mentoring medical representatives to ensure they perform their duties effectively. The ASM also assists representatives in solving problems that they may struggle with due to their lesser experience.
Role of a Regional Sales Manager (RSM)
Moving on to the role of an RSM, this individual usually has around 4-5 years of successful experience as an ASM. Their primary responsibility is to guide and coach 4-5 ASMs as they encounter challenges in the field that require the expertise of a more experienced individual like the RSM.
The ASM's main duty lies in ensuring the implementation of the company's strategy by the M.R.s, with their involvement in planning and decision-making being limited.
In contrast, the RSM's role differs from that of the ASM as they are considered more mature and experienced. The RSM plays a critical part in business planning and decision-making, tasks that the ASM is responsible for executing.
Additionally, the RSM is tasked with training, developing, coaching, and mentoring ASMs to excel in their roles.
