CMM Levels and Their Importance

Hi,

CCMI stands for Capability Maturity Model. It represents the standards that companies must adhere to in order to enhance their work performance. These standards consist of best practices for both product and service development and maintenance.

CCMI 1 companies are less standardized in comparison to CCMI 5. There are 5 CMMI levels:
1. Initial
2. Managed
3. Defined
4. Quantitatively Managed
5. Optimizing
These standards have been developed by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). While following them can lead to improved performance, success is not guaranteed.

Thank you for your reply. It's really informative. Could you please help me understand how I can apply for a CMM level if I want to introduce it into the company? What would be the procedure, and what should be the strength of the company?

Thanks and Regards,

:)

Dear Nikita,

The strength of the company does not matter for attaining any level of CMMI. The only thing that matters is that your company should follow all the practices specified by the CMMI model.

The first step to attain any CMMI Level is to create a Quality Management System (QMS). QMS is basically a set of documents that contain the details about the processes and procedures that happen in your company.

Usually, companies would hire a consultant to do these kinds of activities; however, with a certain knowledge of CMMI, companies can create this set of documents.

Once all these documents are created, they are then compared with the CMMI Model to find out the gaps in the QMS of the company. This activity is called GAP ANALYSIS.

Based on the outcome of the Gap Analysis, the QMS is then restructured, redesigned, and redocumented. Gap Analysis will continue until no gaps are identified in the QMS.

After the completion of the Gap Analysis, the company can then go for certification for CMMI.
