Struggling to Land an HR Job After MBA: How Can I Overcome This Hurdle?

alka.mattoo2005
Respected Seniors, I am an MBA HR 2010 graduate from the University of Pune. I have been searching for a job in HR generalist or HR trainee roles for the past 6 months. Despite having a strong academic background and good knowledge of HR concepts, I have not been successful in securing a job. Time is passing by, and I am feeling the pressure to make a decision. Please help.

I am ready to start as an MT, but these days every organization wants experienced persons. I don't understand how one can gain experience when nobody is giving an opportunity to freshers like me. Please reply.

Check if you have mentioned your contact number and email ID properly. Login to the portals often to keep your resume updated and to check job recommendations, etc. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

An ad hoc vacancy is meant for internal reference. I suggest you expand your networking amongst professionals. The only thing to do right now is to start interacting with them and lay your groundwork. Be patient. It comes in time.

Also, I'd suggest that you do not depend on portals. They are useless. Try to search out the companies that sound potentially worthy of your professional goals and start contacting them.

Opportunities for Freshers in HR

HR consultancies would be interested in freshers, and they always have openings for recruiters. It would be a good start with recruitment. It is tough to get generalist roles upfront.

If you come across any job openings on any of the job portals, call them upfront and schedule an interview. Don't wait for them to come to you. I am also a 2010 MBA HR graduate. I started a few months back on a very low package as an HR Associate with a generalist profile. But today, I have more than 7 months of experience.

As an HR professional, I can only advise you not to wait for a good job. Instead, consider getting involved with reputable consultancies to gain experience in recruitment and sourcing profiles. In the meantime, if you are presented with a good job opportunity, do not hesitate to move forward.

Advice for HR Job Seekers

I suggest that, although it is not easy to find a job related to HR, there is no need to be frustrated. You should continue your search. Firstly, try applying for a position as an HR trainee or as a trainee in an HR-related field. You need to enhance your training practices, which should include tasks like payroll, to increase your chances of success.

All the best,

Aadarsh

I understand your anguish. Not getting a job is a big shocker, especially when you feel you have a good academic record. Well, academics alone do not make an employer choose a person; there is something more. Look into your CV and see what more you have to offer in terms of your skill sets. One suggestion - have you tried for the Defence forces? There is a huge vacancy there. Maybe you need to be more flexible in your choice of job stations.

Wishing you the best for your efforts soon.

Advice for New HR Graduates

Don't focus solely on a salary package or joining a multinational company. First, aim to get any job to gain some experience. Qualifications alone can't guarantee a good job; it will depend on both your qualifications and experience. In HR, you should have at least 4-5 years of working experience. Try to contact your nearest placement company.

I stay at Navi Sanghvi. There is no issue regarding location; I am ready to relocate, sir. I have no prior experience, as I am a fresher MBA in HR.

I know it is very difficult to get a job in HR as a fresher in today's scenario. But not to worry, start your career in any consultancy as a recruiter and simultaneously keep watch on HR generalist profiles. To sit idle at home is better to start a job, and recruitment is also a part of HR.

Hello, I am doing the same, but when I mention that I am a fresher, they immediately say NO. I am not expecting a high salary or a big company; I just want an HR Generalist profile or HR trainee position.

It's better to start a job rather than sitting idle at home, and recruitment is also a part of HR.

Career Path Concerns

Hello, If I start my career as a recruiter, then my experience would be counted in that field only, and I don't want to limit myself to only recruitment.

I think you are very choosy, and you have to be, because you pursued your degree with specialization. Your dream is to secure a job in your relevant field. Please don't become a recruiter, as after a year or two, you will still be where you are right now. You are very selective, so you will choose your job wisely.

Hello, I am not sure if you are criticizing me or motivating me towards my dream. You have used the word "choosy" many times, which is causing confusion for me. Please forgive me if I have misunderstood you.

Hello, thanks for the suggestion. But is it really possible to work from 9 to 6 and then search for a job? I think I would not be able to do justice to my work, which is really against my ethics. Please guide.

No, no, no, DEAR, I am not demotivating you; instead, I'm appreciating your search and willpower to get a good job. I mentioned in the last message that if you find your job, it means that it will be a decent job according to you and suits you. I really don't want to hurt you; sorry for that. And one thing, please remember, "well begun is half done."

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Regards,
Gaurav Pandit.
