Understanding Working Hours Under the Factories Act

Can anyone explain how many hours an employee can work in factories per day as per the Factories Act?

No adult worker should work for more than 9 hours a day. No period of work should exceed 5 hours without a half-hour rest. The total spread of working hours and rest should not exceed 10.5 hours per day.

Dear Muralidharan, average working hours in a week should not exceed 48 hours. In case it exceeds, then overtime needs to be paid. Overtime cannot be for more than 3 hours, and this should include breaks. On a given day, a person should not work more than 10.50 hours, and this must include breaks; no continuous working should exceed 5 hours. Therefore, for a 5-day working week, the per day working hours will be 9 hours, including breaks, and for a 6-day working week, it will be 8 hours, including breaks.

My organization is in the Engineering industry, and we provide one holiday per week. I am wondering how many working hours are required, whether it is 8 or 9 hours.

Currently, we are following a 9-hour workday. I would like to confirm if this aligns with the regulations outlined in the Factory Act.

Thank you.
