Is an MBA from Sikkim Manipal University Valuable for Career Growth in Communications?

saltysanju
Hi all, I am working with an NGO in the communication department under the PRO as a Communication Assistant and Graphic Designer. I do not plan to continue as a Graphic Designer for long, so I have decided to pursue an MBA from SMU. I am curious to know if a Sikkim Manipal University MBA degree holds value and would be beneficial for me. I have recently completed my 4th semester, and I am unsure about which position to apply for initially, whether an executive role or something else.

What elective are you looking at? You can, provided you continue working in your elected field of specialization alongside. Doing it while you work in an unrelated field or doing it without working will have no value, of course. It is best if you join as an executive or a trainee. Don't worry about the salary and all. Starting at the MT phase gives you the opportunity to make more room for your job portfolio later on to progress, for your seniors. Being an MT, you can always seek opportunities where you may suggest new procedures or SOPs, basically giving you the chance to impress your management team with creativity and practicality. Go ahead and start a program.

Best of Luck

Thanks, attrisenzu, for the suggestions. I was also thinking of starting as a trainee or an executive initially. This will provide a solid foundation for me to gain a better understanding of HR. Another question I have is whether an SMU degree holds value?

Glad you absorbed one half of the ideal. As I had written in the earlier post: SMU and others like such [IGNOU, IMT, SymBiosis, etc.] all have the same leverage. It again depends upon how you execute your distance MBA (simultaneously while working vs. simply doing it sitting at home). Only if you are able to show that you have done both simultaneously will it have some weightage on your resume.

What I suggest is you can look at other options for an MBA if SMU feels less competent to you, course-wise. Moreover, it is almost the same in differing colleges/universities.

You can do a good job in the field of MBA, and SMU is a good university for distance learning widely recognized by UGC.

Thank you all for your valuable advice. Can anybody provide me with a reference to a company or consultant where I can enroll to secure a good job? As I am married, transitioning into a new field would be challenging, so a salary scale similar to what I currently have would be ideal.

If you are switching fields, the best thing to do is consult your current departmental heads. With a new field in question, chances are (depending upon age and prior experience) that a Management Trainee (MT) profile could be unlikely.
