Hi All, I'm Girish, working as an HR Executive in an IT company. I have a doubt regarding professional tax. I'm new to this company, and in our company, we are deducting professional tax from employees who are earning below ₹10,000. However, I have learned that professional tax should be deducted from employees earning ₹10,000 and above.

2. Does professional tax differ between manufacturing sectors and other sectors?

Professional Tax in Local Bodies

Professional tax is credited to local bodies such as Grama Panchayat, Municipality, and Municipal Corporation. It may differ from state to state. In Kerala, there is no ceiling. It is deducted slab-wise based on the income and is common to all sectors.

Professional Tax Slab for Andhra Pradesh

Professional tax is the same for all sectors. Please find the professional tax slab of Andhra Pradesh:

- ₹5,001 to ₹6,000: ₹60
- ₹6,001 to ₹10,000: ₹80
- ₹10,001 to ₹15,000: ₹100
- ₹15,001 to ₹20,000: ₹150
- More than ₹20,000: ₹200

In Gujarat, the minimum limit to deduct the professional tax is 3000. So, from 3001 onwards, PT is deducted statutorily.

Hi, Girish. See the Karnataka PT Slab:

- Gross salary below ₹9,999 per month: No deduction
- ₹9,999 to ₹14,999: PT ₹150
- ₹14,999 and above: PT ₹200

PT is applicable in all sectors, the same in Channiga and Bangalore.

Professional Tax Rates in Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, professional tax starts from ₹2501/-. There is no professional tax for a salary up to ₹2500/- monthly.

- ₹2501 - ₹3500: ₹60/-
- ₹3501 - ₹5000: ₹120/-
- ₹5001 - ₹10000: ₹175/-
- ₹10001 onwards: ₹2500/- annually, with ₹200 every month and ₹300 in February.

Before two years, it was like this. If not changed, then the professional tax is as mentioned above.

Professional Tax Slab in MP

In MP, the professional tax slab for Salary P.A and Deduction P.A is as follows:

- 0-76,000: Not applicable
- 76,001-90,000: 1,000
- 90,001-120,000: 1,500
- 120,000 & above: 2,500

Tamil Nadu Professional Tax Rate Slabs: (Village Panchayat)

- Rs.1 to Rs.30,000 = Rs.94
- Rs.30,001 to Rs.45,000 = Rs.235
- Rs.45,001 to Rs.60,000 = Rs.469
- Rs.60,001 to Rs.75,000 = Rs.704
- Above Rs.75,000 = Rs.938
