Relation Of Dressing Well 2 Per4mance, Reqd Suggestions

Hey Guys,
Wanted to know from you people whether people dressing (men) or probably overall grooming has anything to do with your job.
I came across an instance wherein a good employee told me that he wears good brands of TShirts (this person is an outstanding performer). He has to actually come in in formals , its mentioned in the Rules of the company. But at the time of the performance appraisal he has argued that his work has nothing to do with his clothing. This is a apparel company.
Kindly illustrate an example of how he should be convinced about wearing the desired attire to work. Well i know thats its professional but its difficult to throw a person on these grounds specially when he is good.
Any other suggestions welcome.
Jensen.

Hi,
It is not necessary that the employee wears branded cloths in the name of formals. The company would have mentioned about the formal clothing probably to bring a sense of professionalism in the workplace. [Correct me if Iam wrong].
Clothing to some extent influences the environment around, thus affecting the minds of the other employees. For Eg, in the IT industry and advertising industry people normally wear casual clothings because they want to keep their minds free and put on a casual attitude. This is required because they work under lots of pressure and stress.
Not only clothing also the colours one wear matters. In a professional environment the colours worn are sober and plesant. That also adds to the environment.

Dressing is not related to performance, at the same it depends on the corproate climate and organizational environment w.r.t dressing.
If organizational environment demands person to maintain certain attire he need to maintain that as business etiquete. No Deviations.
It falls on behavioral pattern of employee not on performance dimension. You can counsel the employee on the business attire requirment.
I did the same for the company which is into Clinical Operations, i mentioned about the business attire in the employee handbook and the same is circulated to all the employees.
Quite some instances i faced like you also. But i could able to convince them how important is to maintain the attire as professional.

Hello Saumya! I am YSABELMICAELA . Iwould like to share some thoughts about office dressing. Perhaps this could help you encourage your personnel to dressed up for the office appropriately.

Getting dressed for the office does'nt mean leaving our personal style behind. Our goal to dressed for work is to project a professional ,competent image, regardless of our employment level or career path.

The style, color, lenghts and fit of our fashion choices will speak volumes about our ability to do our job. If we are concerned about our career ,we will be more concerned with looking professional than looking cute and trendy. In general ,the more distracting a piece of clothing or jewelry is , the less appropriate it is for office wear.

More guidelines to looking professional:

* Color plays a big part in professional image such as red, navy, gray and black. They work well with pantsuits , skirts and shoes and can mix with softer feminine colors that are appropriate like ice blue , lilac, soft pink and ivory.

* Jewelry that jangles (chandelier earrings and stacks of bracelets) is distracting. Opt for stud earrings and single bracelet.

*Slouchy handbags look sloppy. Chose structured styles that project an organized image.

*Manicured nails, run-free hose, scuff - free shoes and neat hair.

* Pants should be fitted but free of visible panty lines.Skirts especially straight style like pencil skirts should be lose enough to sit down comfortably.

Hi,
Probably, you can call the person and have a casual discussion with him. Take him out for tea or snack, and make him understand about your company policies and regulations.
Make the meeting short and simple. Tell him what you wanted to convey. Tell it in a polite manner. hope he'll understand.

Hi,
As every company has its own compensation policy, personnel policy, retention policy and many other policies, every body are abide to that and they are expected to follow. It will be same when it comes to dress code also. Just because he is a good performer he can't deviate the policy or dress code. It will have impact on other employee's attitude towards organisation. It will be better if he is made to understand why it is necessary to follow.

I am of the opinion that one dresses well to show respect for others and to show respect for oneself.
So while clothes have nothing to do with performance directly, they do indirectly affect it... eg. a sales person or customer interfacing staff should avoid meeting customers casually dressed while in a business setting.
As Soumya said, brands are not important at all, but the nature of attire is. Explain to him that he would go swimming wearing denims, nor would one use swimwear to a celebration. It would not be respectful to the host. Similarly, there is attire which is appropriate for specific occasions only, and workplace is one of them. Also mention that in a business setting, he would be the brand ambassador of the organization to the outside world, and casual attire would reflect poorly on the organization.
Being a good performer, you will have to repeat this dose to him several times so that he does not take things personally.
All the best!
Ryan
