Transitioning to a Full-Time Training Career: How Should I Start?

I'm working as an HR professional for the past 1 year and 8 months, and I have a keen interest in training and development. I have conducted sessions for my employees, and now I am considering pursuing training as a full-time career or freelancing opportunity. Can anyone suggest how I should proceed with this transition?

First, choose a couple of topics on which you feel you have thorough knowledge, abiding interest, and a deep passion. Source books, activities, course outlines, etc. Now, assuming you were to run it for a corporate setting, align your inputs with the course outline. Ensure there is sufficient theory, ample practical exercises, and games to reinforce learning. Make sure you have enough material to last the whole day. You may need to plan exercise sheets, arrange for props, etc. If possible, have a PowerPoint presentation prepared on the subject to serve as the backbone of the program.

Ideally, try out the program with colleges, social service clubs, etc., to build confidence and become familiar with the material.

It would be immensely helpful to attend a couple of training programs led by well-known faculty to understand how training is structured and delivered. However, be cautious not to outright copy their style but to develop your own.

First, analyze your organization to determine the type of training needed so that the effectiveness of workers and staff can be improved. Prepare for this through training books and training sites, and remember to consider what your people need.

Hi Garima, your problem is how to approach colleges and institutions. The solution is that there are some organizations that work as intermediaries on a commission basis and help you find clients (colleges/institutions) for conducting workshops. They manage everything from workshop venues, schedules, dates, to timing, etc.

Generally, they charge a 40-50% commission. For example, for a 3-hour/one-day session, if they charge the client Rs. 10,000, their share could be Rs. 5,000 or less. Despite the commission, it is still beneficial for you.

You need to start with a training needs analysis. Make an inventory of all weaknesses/challenges to enhance productivity, communication, team spirit, safety, health, etc. List areas where you consider capacity building is needed. Establish a plan of actions, taking into consideration the linkages among areas, and move forward from here.
