Are PHR and SPHR Certifications Worth It for HR Pros in India? What Are the Alternatives?

Could somebody please tell me how valuable the PHR and SPHR certifications would be for an HR professional in India? If they are not valuable, what are the other certifications that an Indian HR professional could consider?

Hi Leena,

I don't think PHR/SPHR certification carries significant value in the Indian scenario. I have a PHR certification, and a lot of employers, even people in the HR department, don't know what PHR/SPHR certification is. In any case, the certification is valid for a period of 3 years and has to be re-validated.

Dear All,

According to what I know, it's really a good credential. It's much easier to obtain the CCP issued by World at Work compared to the JCA and other certifications issued by ERI DLC. This information is not meant to demotivate anyone but to provide understanding.

From the two websites, SHRM and HRCI, the qualifications seem to be highly valued. I would appreciate more comments.

Can you elaborate on SCLD?

In my experience, a full-time MBA degree is better than a correspondence MBA. But that is my opinion; I could be wrong.

Well, I believe that a full-time program is better too. But for a person who wants to pursue studies through correspondence while working, is Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning (SCDL) a good option?

I have also been thinking of going for a PHR exam. Before doing that, I took a free PHR test today on one of the websites. Not surprisingly, I found that many of the questions were from the US labor laws apart from the general ones. I personally feel that there may not be a lot of value addition. More mature views are invited.

If you see the syllabus for the PHR/SPHR exam, it is meant for the people working in the US, as the majority of the content relates to US labor laws such as 401K, FMLA Act, etc.

I hope you are doing well. Regarding your query about GPHR, deciding to take the exam depends on your work experience and the sector you are interested in or currently working in. It will be more related to topics such as expatriate compensation, multicultural teams, etc., most of which will be mentioned in the syllabus. If you have over 5 years of work experience in software or BPO, I would recommend considering taking it as it could be beneficial. As for other certifications, I will research them and am also exploring certifications from foreign universities. If you come across any, please share them with me.

Hi Team,

I just want to give a few inputs on this. I hear that PHR and SPHR are more prone to US-related knowledge, especially on labor laws perspective. On the contrary, GPHR is more from a global perspective. However, they have set some eligible criteria to enroll in each of those certification exams.

From a learning perspective, I guess all three certifications will reassure your confidence on the subject. However, from an Indian perspective, though it is considered as value-added knowledge, I have never seen any Indian organization prescribing it as a prerequisite qualification. Whereas in the US, I do see organizations setting it as a criterion for selecting HR personnel, and some organizations do encourage their internal professionals to get certified.

Hi! I have been trying to sit for the PHR examination conducted by SHRM/HRCI but am having difficulty selecting a test center as it is not available in Bangladesh. I have done some research on the value of these certifications. To understand the value, you can compare these certifications to CA/ACCA/CIMA/CFA for professional accountants, CIM Chartered Marketers for marketers, and PHR/GPHR for certified HR professionals.

I have found that SHRM has opened an office in India. Do you know about the examination facilities there?
