Facing a Dilemma: Can I Update My Education Details at Work Without Getting Fired?

Hey everyone, I'm new to this BPO. I just joined a company as Voice tech support. I have made a grave mistake during the process. I told them I finished my education with 10+2, which is not true. I am, in fact, pursuing my Engineering degree. Now, I was told that if the company finds out about this, they'll kick me out. I joined the company mainly for the extra income, but I realized that it would be better if I could use the experience in this BPO on my resume during my placements.

My question is, is there any chance that I could update my profile in the company records later, like after my Engineering graduation?

If that's not possible, will the software companies conduct a background verification regarding my work experience in this BPO? If they will, what kind of information could they retrieve from my ex-employer? Is there any chance that they'll find out from my ex-employer that my education stopped at 10+2?

I thought someone from HR could help me out regarding this matter.

I need your help with this, people. I'm not the kind of guy who just comes to kill time by working. I am serious when I work. So, please help me out. If there is any way out, I am ready for it.

In my experience, most candidates tend to hide certain facts during the recruitment and selection process. The HR Department typically checks references, previous employers, etc. However, when it comes to educational qualifications, they usually verify this at the time of joining. Don't worry, now that you have made a mistake, just stay quiet and work hard to earn the trust of your superiors. They are likely to support you if any issues arise. Best of luck.

Nothing to worry about; just don't reveal anything in the present organization. After completing your engineering, you can apply to software companies. Moreover, your BPO experience will not be calculated for software roles. If some companies do consider that, in their background check, they will not verify your education details. They only check your work duration, salary packages, and your performance - nothing more than that. So, there's no need to worry about future companies. Just ensure it remains very confidential in the present organization.

Yes, you would have been in a lot more trouble if you had lied about the completion of your engineering. As it is, the company will not be checking whether you are pursuing something right now or not (just don't tell anyone about it).

I also doubt that you would be able to use the current experience in another company which is not a BPO because companies generally look for full-time experience post your graduation, and hence this would not be of much use.

You should not hide the fact of misrepresenting your education status from the management even if you are at risk of losing your job. I assure you that the management of the organization would appreciate your courage in disclosing the truth. In fact, this would be a corrective measure for your own attitude.

Frankly speaking, management does not place as much value on college education certificates/degrees as they do on the performance aspect of assigned tasks. If you are a master of your skill, you can earn the favor of management. As long as you are able to deliver results, management will be supportive and proud of employees like you for your honesty.

It is a serious mistake that should not occur because this is the main thing on which you are offered the job. If the HR department did not physically check or verify your degree, then there is no problem. However, it may be serious and could lead to your dismissal as you are not qualified for the job. Actually telling the company that I finished my Engineering was my first option, but I changed it at the last minute. I knew the risks instantly. Thanks for the help, buddy.

I truly am conflicted about misleading my company. However, if I follow my ethics and tell them the truth, they will likely terminate me. I have not yet fully demonstrated my capabilities, so they may not be aware of my potential. I would have been honest if I had the opportunity, but I am hesitant to do so now. I am not being dishonest; I simply mentioned that I completed my education at the 10+2 level. Is that a significant offense, I wonder? I have not exaggerated my qualifications. I wish all HR professionals in the country were as understanding as you described, appreciating honesty. Unfortunately, I don't think that's always the case.

Qualifications do matter when you apply for further study-based jobs, but for the time being, you're doing a BPO service, which you ain't taking as a profession. So continue with it without flashing out your details and gain experience.

Well, I intend to use the experience I gain from this company in my resume after my graduation for a software job. At least, I will have corporate work experience. Besides, I was placed in a very good Tech process. So, I am hoping companies would appreciate this fact, giving me an advantage over other applicants.

Before hiring people, BPOs conduct verification procedures. If everything is found to be clear, only then do they hire you. Now that you have been hired, be smart enough and do not disclose confidential information. Maintain your good work ethic, and when you decide to leave, do so as most others do - by citing career advancement in another field.

You have a problem, but it's not serious! You mentioned that you have completed your 10+2, and that's true. One more thing: in pursuing a B.Tech or engineering degree, your experience in BPO doesn't count. I can say that because I am a software engineer myself. Working in a BPO for more money is okay.
