I am a management student and currently working in a company as a summer intern in the HR department for my final year project. The company has requested me to draft a 'Dress Code Policy'.

All the gurus out here, could you please help me out with your guidance?

As you are inquiring about, it is very important for any organization to represent their company. You should wear formal attire, such as pants, a blazer, a light-colored shirt, and a tie. This will be good.

All employees are expected to strictly adhere to the dress code of the company at all times.

Level | Dress Code

CEO, President | Formal business suit. (Blazers/Jackets may be hung in their cabins) - Mandatory

Vice President, Sr. Vice President, Asst. Vice President | Formal business suit. (Blazers/Jackets may be hung in their cabins) - Recommended

Sr. Manager, Manager, Assistant Manager | Formal wear (Wearing a tie is mandatory)

Sr. Officer, Officer, Sr. Assistant, Assistant | Business casuals (Jeans, T-shirts, Chinos, Shorts, Sports shoes, slippers, etc., are not allowed)

Marketing | Formal wear (Wearing a tie is mandatory)

All Women Employees | Indian or Western formal wear

During a client/customer visit, everyone must be formally attired. Department heads must ensure that the employees working under them adhere to the dress code at all times.

Employees can dress casually on all Saturdays. However, shorts, slippers, etc., are not considered as part of casual wear.

When drafting a dress code policy, one needs to inform employees what formal clothes mean. For men, it can be business formal with a blazer, formal with a light-colored full-sleeve shirt, or semi-formal/casual. The same guidelines apply for females.

The company expects all the employees to wear appropriate dress relative to the job that you are doing. It is important to present a professional image with regard to appearance standards of dress and personal hygiene.
For men
• Suit or Jacket and complimentary trousers
• Collared Shirt
• Tie
• Clean Shoes with appropriately matching socks
For ladies
• Business suit or collared blouse with matching skirt or trousers
• Clean formal shoes

Guidelines
Formal clothes are acceptable as office wear during weekdays. Wearing a tie is not compulsory
Formal dress is very important when an employee is on official tour or is likely to come in direct contact with Suppliers / Customers / Dealers
On working Saturdays employees can be dressed in Casuals
All employees are to keep in mind that they are the ambassador of the company and thus have to be properly groomed so as to project a professional image at all times in the office.

All companies are following a dress code policy, which is mandatory. According to my company policy, employees should wear formals from Monday to Friday. For ladies, this means a shirt and trousers or a suit salwar, and for men, a shirt and pants or trousers. On Saturday, the dress code is informals.

The dress code for a company depends on the nature of the business and the amount of client interaction on a daily basis. If a majority of the employees are required to interact with clients or potential clients, it would be sensible to advocate Business Formals as the dress code during the week, and casuals during the weekends (i.e., Fri, Sat). If the majority of the employees are not expected to interact with the outside world, then it is okay to allow them to wear Business Casuals or casuals during the weekdays.

In the IT & ITES industries, it is generally accepted norm to dress comfortably, which includes casuals, but it is not yet so in other sectors.

Some more tips for Dress Code Policy
Dress Code
All employees are requested to follow the following dress code:
Monday to Thursday
- For Male employees: Business casuals like Shirt / Polo-shirt, Trouser and Shoes with Socks (No sports or Canvas shoes).
-    For Lady employees: Same as above will be applicable. They can also alternatively wear Saris / Salwar / Kurta etc.
- Fridays and Weekends (if one is coming to office for work)
-    Shirt / T-Shirt, Trouser / Jeans & Shoes / Sports Shoes / Canvas Shoes or the same as Monday to Thursday.
Slippers / Sandals are not allowed for men on any of the days, while in office, with the exception, in case of any medical problem in the feet. During rainy season, one could wear waterproof shoes.

Hello Agnes,
Some of the below mentioned policies might be of help:
· Male members must wear business shirts, smart trousers and ties. During meetings with clients / prospective clients outside the office, they are also expected to wear blazers.
· Female members are expected to wear businesslike clothes(Indian/Western)
· Clothing must be clean, in good repair and well ironed.
· Hair must be kept clean and tidy.
· Casual clothing is acceptable only on weekends / holidays.
· For Saturday meetings, the employees are allowed to wear smart casual clothes.

I believe it depends on the sector you are working in. For example, in the IT sector, the dress code is not that important. You can even wear casuals at times. However, in other sectors like FMCG and specialty marketing-related jobs, formal attire is always required. I guess that depends on the business you are in.

Hi All,

I really agree with Khyat. In IT companies, one can wear casuals on weekdays too. I am working with an IT company, and my headquarters are in Finland. I visited Finland last month, and there I was surprised to see that everyone was wearing casuals even in meetings. Only directors and VPs used to wear formal attire like suits and blazers, but everyone else from different departments was in casual wear. It seems that even we can wear casuals while working in an IT company.

I believe that a proper dress code exhibits the professionalism of the organization. Of course, casual attire once a week or on holidays is fine.

I want to know if sleeveless attire is completely unacceptable for female staff, or if it can be worn. Does it fall under the category of formal wear?

If someone wears a sleeveless suit, would it be considered formal or informal attire? Should it be allowed or not?
