Can We Issue a Salary Certificate Without Stating the Purpose? Seeking HR Insights

Hi, I work as an Executive HR in an advertising agency. I need to know if we can issue a salary certificate without a purpose mentioned in the request by an employee. This is a salary certificate and not a salary slip that we mail to our employees every month.

A salary slip is sufficient to issue, and no other document is required during the financial year. If the employee falls under the tax bracket, Form 16 shall be issued after the completion of the financial year.

It is always advisable to mention the purpose for which the salary certificate is being issued. Hence, whenever an employee asks for a salary certificate, ask him to mention the purpose. If no purpose is mentioned, at least you should include a statement that the certificate is being issued for personal use. In this way, the employee will not be able to misuse the certificate.

A salary slip is an official statement of earnings received from the company, and hence no other certificate is required to be issued, nor should such a request be entertained. It is inappropriate to demand a salary certificate for any reason, as the salary slip has already been issued. We do not entertain such requests from our employees.
