Is there any provision in IT companies that they are expected to provide employment to a minimum percentage of staff who are physically handicapped or challenged individuals? Can you please let me know if you have any information about this?
There is an Act called "Persons with Disabilities and Equal Opportunities Act" 1995. As per the provisions under this Act, 3% reservation is to be provided to visually handicapped, hearing impaired, and orthopedically handicapped persons, in posts which have been identified and earmarked for handicapped persons.
Please go through this Act and examine its applicability to your industry.
The act being referred to is THE PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES (EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES, PROTECTION OF RIGHTS AND FULL PARTICIPATION) ACT, 1995. The said act applies to central government establishments and state government establishments but not to private employers' establishments. If you are not a government establishment, then you are not bound by it and are free to choose not to recruit persons with disabilities.
Hiring "challenged" staff is good practice (do not refer to them as disabled). At HCL, we had several people who were deaf or mute working in HR itself. I recommend visiting the website of the Rehabilitation Council of India for more details. Additionally, there is an NGO named SAMARTHYA that conducts audits for barrier-free infrastructure.
Surya, I myself am hearing challenged and am a post-graduate too. It's okay about the error, but I am curious to know how you train the hearing and speech-impaired individuals in HR jobs.
