Need a Rent Receipt Format for Tax Exemption – Can You Help?

Hi, I want to avail HRA benefits for exemption of Income Tax as I stay in a rented house. My flat owner does not have any format of the rent receipt. Can anyone help me by providing a format for the house rent receipt that is used for Income Tax Exemption so that I can give it to my flat owner so he can provide me the same? Please help me out.

Dear Friend, House rent receipts are available in all stationery shops, or you can ask for one from your finance department. I am sure they will provide you with one.

Actually, it is not a complex format. You can easily create it in a Word document. Just write the heading Rent Receipt and type the following in order:

- House Owner's Name.............................
- Received From Mr/Mrs..............................
- Rupees.............................(In Words)..............................
- On account of rent for the Full/portion of the premises No.....................
- Situated in .......................... Particulars................... Rent for the Month/year.............
- Signature of the Owner ............

You have to affix a one-rupee revenue stamp on this rent receipt and obtain a signature from your owner on the same. I am sure this will suffice for your needs.

Can we change this format and add "from month" and "to month" to club it for like 3 months or so? Is it acceptable?
