Why Do Industries Focus Solely on Safety Celebrations for Accident Prevention?

Dear Friends,

What is the impact of celebrating National Safety Day on industrial accident prevention? Why do industries focus on safety alone when conducting celebrations? Why don't other departments like manufacturing, procurement, finance, and welfare organize celebrations if such events are meant to motivate employees?

If other departments start celebrating the event, the impact may not reach the expected levels. The safety department's role is first as a teacher, then as policemen. The impression of the department holds within the operating parameters. That's why it's essential for them to act as teachers, not as tailors or individuals from other professions.

Dear Sir,

According to me, just celebrating a day for the sake of safety does not help in incident prevention. Then why do companies celebrate National Safety Day? Just for publicity? Some companies invite government members and media coverage, etc., for the same. It all seems like eye-washing and just to show that they are taking care of safety.

Other departments do not celebrate because there is no dedicated national day like March 4th for Safety. In typical Indian industry, priorities go like this: Production, Cost, Quality, and finally Safety. For the first three, top management closely monitors and ensures all work is done well. There is no need for wrong publicity in these areas. However, when it comes to safety, management gets one day to show its commitment and portray that safety is the first priority, hence the widespread celebration on March 4th. But in reality, safety seems to receive the lowest priority.

I look forward to hearing your views.

Dear All,

I agree with the views of Dipil, as they are also correct. Most industries are doing it for the sake of media coverage.

My views - The safety department takes the lead for safety initiatives for the smooth operation of the plan. So, it's their ownership to take the lead on the Safety Day and arrange for all.

Impact - By arranging competitions and providing gifts, at least we can motivate safety among the employees and workers. Most of them take part in these competitions for gifts. While participating in these competitions, they will think in a positive manner as the result should be safety. Because of this thinking, at least in similar situations, they can act proactively.

Regards.
