How Can We Shift Our Office Culture Away from Frequent Sick Leave Abuse?

van doorn
Hi all, In our company (ICT), many people call in sick for one day or leave early due to sickness. The most commonly used reasons are feverishness, headache, and general discomfort. Additionally, when someone has an appointment and no days left in their leave, they simply say they are sick and do not come to the office.

Until now, we have not taken any action on this. The only action being taken is a deduction when someone calls in sick (i.e., a day sick results in a day deducted from the salary).

However, what I have heard is that employees are accepting of this situation, so whenever they have something, they call in sick. Can anyone enlighten me on the laws, rules, and regulations concerning sick leave? Or, more precisely, what I would like to know is how to change this office culture.

Suggestions such as asking for a doctor's note (which can be purchased), sending someone to the sick person's house, or providing a set amount of sickness leave have been considered.

Please assist me with this!

Regards, Petra

Sick Leave Eligibility and Application Process

Employees are eligible for sick leave. The only requirement is that whenever an employee wants to apply for sick leave, they should avail themselves of the leave and apply for sick leave upon returning to duties. One can't apply for sick leave in advance. Sick leaves are eligible for those employees who are not covered under ESI. Sick leaves and earned leaves can be carried forward year on year.
