Overcoming Job Search Challenges: How I Turned My Setbacks into Growth Opportunities in HR

Hello friends,

This is Indhu from Coimbatore. First, I should thank all the members in citeHR. I am an MSW (HR) candidate from the 2009 batch. While I was studying, I was very ambitious and always believed that after finishing my course soon, I would get a job. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Even though I have a good percentage (71%), I couldn't secure a job. So, my level of confidence has slightly decreased. Later, I realized my mistakes. Yes, I have a good academic percentage, but I lack the skills expected by higher officials. When I recognized my mistake, I started working on improving myself. Despite being a member of citeHR since 2007, I never even posted a single query. Now, I download all the necessary materials from this site, which has made me a more suitable candidate in my dream field of HR. I hope to secure a job soon, and at that time, I will definitely reach out to you all.

I am basically from Coimbatore and currently working in Oman. In comparison to Chennai, Coimbatore has fewer opportunities, but it is home to many MNCs and major industries.

Indhu, be confident and consider changing your strategy/approach. Try thinking differently to capture the attention of HR professionals.

Thanks for sharing your emotional words. I was also the same as you. I also have an MSW in HR. I did not lose hope and I got a good job in Pune after completing my MSW six months ago. Now, I am settled well and presently working in Kolkata as an HR officer. So, I request you to not lose hope. Definitely, you will succeed. Don't expect a high salary initially; just join some HR consultancies as a recruiter.

Thank you friends for your support and care. And I would like to clarify certain things with you.

1. Few of our friends told me to come to Chennai.
Ans: Friends, I worked as a counselor for 6 months in a psychiatric setup. Apart from that, I don't have any experience in the HR field. If I got a job in Chennai, how much are they supposed to pay? A minimum of 8k. With that 8k, I have to take care of all my needs. Moreover, I have to take care of my family's needs too. You know, friends, the cost of living in Chennai is too high. Is it possible within the 8k? If the company pays a handsome salary, I will definitely come to Chennai.

2. Few of our friends asked me to pursue higher studies.
Ans: You are right, friends. I also would like to pursue higher studies. Currently, my financial position is not sound enough (I prefer not to explain it), but later I will definitely do.

Don't give up. Be positive. Meanwhile, try to learn new things. This is the right time to develop yourself. Even if you want to do some things, you will not have time. Wait for the day to come and don't give up. Keep trying; one day, you will be the master. I had a similar experience, but I didn't give up.

Failure is the stepping stone for success.

I too have an MSW in HR, passed out in 2007. I am currently working in the construction field. Don't worry, you will soon find a good opportunity. Be proactive and register on all job sites. Consider relocating from your native place and maintain your confidence, as it is crucial for an HR professional.

Hi Indhu,

I wish you the best of luck. Change your strategy and identify the aspects that interviewers are looking for in you. For example, once someone informs you that you were not selected, or something of that sort, ask them politely what went wrong and get to know your fault. Have determination.
