What does "m/s" stand for in addressing a company's name?

M/s stands for Messrs (plural of Mister). It is how we address any man or woman for salutation. Just like us, a company or organization also has a life cycle. It comes into existence when established, and ceases to exist when it is shut down.

You are partially right. "Messrs" is applied only when a company's name has a proper noun as the first word, such as M/s. Anil & Co., and not in Standard Printers Co.

In addressing a company's name, "m/s" stands for Messrs. This prefix signifies the organizational name as a distinct legal entity.

‘M/s' is short form of ‘Messrs', that is, plural of Mr. (Mister). Normally it used for addressing a firm. Probably, it was started to be used when there were no companies (Pvt. Ltd. or Ltd.) and only firms (partnership) were used to be formed by a group of more than one person. Hence, to address to the group of persons who formed the firm the term ‘M/s' became popular, viz., M/s Ram & Co.

Hello Everyone,

This is my first ever post on this webpage, although I have been reading your posts, etc., and it has been useful many times. Coming back to the above question, "M/s." is used for a proprietorship company, not for a Pvt Ltd or Public Ltd company. I learned this while working with a Chartered Accountant.

Hope this information helps you all.

Regards,
