Marriage while in Notice Period - can I take leave?

snanduri0
Hi HR Team,

I work in a software company. Presently, I am serving my notice period, but during this time, my marriage is scheduled. Can I take leave and serve the remaining notice period? I do not want to extend my notice period beyond 2 months, which I am already serving. Is there a chance that my manager may ask me to serve notice beyond 2 months? If so, how can I overcome this situation? I resigned from my position on July 23 with a 2-month notice period, which ends on September 24. Please advise me on this situation.

Thank you.

Dear Nanduri,

At the outset, let me congratulate you in advance on your marriage! Leave taken during the notice period is generally not approved as this might affect the transition/KT activities that are ongoing. Hence, there might be chances of your last working date getting extended if you go on leave during your notice period.

This decision would also depend on the number of days you plan to take as leave. Therefore, I would suggest checking the exit formalities with your HR Representative and then making a decision accordingly.

Dear Nanduri,

Companies do adjust the notice period (number of days fall short) by making wage deductions during full and final settlement. It all depends on the approval of your resignation letter and relieving date. You should request your boss to relieve you early and deduct the amount from your full and final settlement.

Regards.

Hi,

I would suggest reading the rulebook of the company so that you will not be inconvenienced.

Hi,

First, be clear about your company's policy regarding Resignation/Notice Period. The normal practice is that any leave taken during the Notice Period is on a 'without pay' basis and is considered part of your Notice Period. If this is the case, you will not have to work additional days. However, the company may not accept the leave as LWP but may require you to work compensatory (additional) days. Also, find out if you can buy out the Notice Period. To answer all these questions, you must first read the rule book/HR Manual relating to this matter. Alternatively, talk to your immediate superior/HR person. They may understand the situation if you explain the whole matter clearly.

Please understand that the grant or refusal to grant leave is a management prerogative. However, under the circumstances when your marriage is happening during the time when you are serving your notice period, I am sure your HR Manager will be pleased to grant you leave if you make a request for the same.

Leave can be granted during the period when an employee is serving the notice period.

I have always strived to allow for the employee who has resigned to do his handover ASAP and then relieve him also at the earliest so that he can have a decent break from the "treadmill" before he starts all over again.
