Struggling with Salary Negotiation After a Career Break? Seeking Advice on Skills and Expectations

Hi all,

I have 3 years of experience in HR, and I am pursuing my MBA through distance learning. However, for the past 1.5 years, I have been at home due to some personal reasons. Now, I have started looking for a job.

My problem is that I am not good at salary negotiation during interviews. Please suggest some points that will enhance my negotiation skills. Also, please advise me on what the salary range should be for a person considering my gap in employment, education, and skills.

Just look for a good career-oriented firm. If it is a good company, they will provide you with a good pay in turn. However, since you are pursuing your MBA, look forward to a company where you can learn related to your domain field. Once you are done with your MBA and have hands-on experience, you can negotiate your salary thereafter as per the market. I hope this is taken in the right way.

For negotiating salary, three things are a must:

1. Strong/high communication skills and self-confidence.
2. Nice experience in related fields.
3. Appropriate degree/diploma.

If you have the above-mentioned three things, you may negotiate salary.

Since you have had a gap, companies may offer the same salary or slightly less. Try to negotiate for the same salary or even 10% more. At this point, getting back into the job market and establishing yourself is more important than monetary benefits. It will fall into place once you prove your talent.

I do agree with the above advice. As you have had a break in your career, reestablishing yourself should be the main motive rather than the salary. Once you achieve your first step, then I think there should not be any reason for you to negotiate your salary. You will start getting good packages based on your talent, skillset, and experience.
