Designing Annual Leave: How Many Paid Leaves and Holidays Should Be Included?

neetakarkare
Hi Friends,

I have to design a list of leaves in a year. Please, can somebody tell me how many paid leaves (casual/sick) and holidays (festivals) should be in a year.

Thanks and regards,
Neeta

Understanding Minimum Holidays and Leaves

You may first ensure that the minimum holidays and leaves, as prescribed by the respective Acts applicable to your establishment (i.e., Factories Act, Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, or others), are given. Then, frame a policy. For details regarding festival holidays, please refer to the National and Festival Holidays Act of your State. National Holidays are invariably the same, i.e., January 26th, August 15th, and October 2nd, with the exception that in some states, May 1st (May Day) is also a Public Holiday.

Types of Leaves Under Different Acts

For the minimum number of leaves (casual, sick, and earned), please refer to the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act if your establishment belongs to it. However, under the Factories Act and Plantations Labour Act, the only leave to which an employee is entitled is earned leave, which will accrue when they work at least 240 days in the preceding year. The number of leaves to be given is at the rate of one leave for every 20 days worked.

The above are the minimum days of holidays and leaves, but you can grant more holidays and leaves according to your interest.

Dear Neeta,

I agree with Mr. T.K. Madhu. He has clearly explained what you should do. Leaves vary from act to act, and festival holidays differ from state to state. Please follow Mr. T.K. Madhu's guidance accordingly.
