How Can I Make Our HR Communication and Soft Skills Sessions More Engaging and Informative?

priyanka vaid
We have a knowledge-sharing committee in our organization, and being in HR, I am part of the communication and soft skills group. Please suggest something that I can share with the group or any communication or soft skills session that I can conduct, which is both interesting and knowledgeable. Alternatively, any other suggestions that could be helpful.

Hi,

You can give a presentation on Attitude, Personality, Behavior, or current trends in the industry. I have enclosed the PPT on attitude.

Dear Priyanka,

I request you to read the discussions in the following link. It is about Knowledge-preneuring. You will need to contribute even beyond the session. Hence, it might add value to it.

Wish you all the best. I request you to share your takeaways from that session.

Dear Priyanka,

It's great that you have a committee devoted to knowledge sharing. Here are some ideas:

- A display board on achievements and for idea sharing
- Weekly or monthly newsletter to which each department can contribute
- Appreciation Day for recognizing breakthrough work/innovations
- Role plays and presentations to share learnings from client meetings
- Circulating news on industry-relevant issues
- Discussion forums for current issues, both local and global

Dear Mohammed,

The presentation on attitude was really nice. Thank you very much.

Can anyone tell me how I ask questions as I am new to this website?

Thanks,

Hi there,

I have a few ideas on communication and knowledge sharing.

• If you have an intranet facility in your organization, you can create a page where the whole organization can add information they wish to share with everyone - be it a book, a presentation, or any information they want to share.

• Additionally, individuals going on a training program can always request a soft copy of the materials provided by the lecturers, which can then be posted on the intranet page for everyone to read and learn from.

• In our organization, we have a tech boost session every Tuesday. If an employee has a new idea or information, they can invite people to attend their session from 10 to 11 am. This allows them to present and discuss their idea or information openly.

Priyanka,

From what you've posted on this site, you seem to be part of an 'Employee Engagement' initiative.

So, some ground rules first....here goes:

- Whatever it is that you do at these sessions, do it with conviction & passion....very important.

- Don't make it a download/monologue - make it highly interactive.

- It needn't always be a 'gyaan' session - mix it up with fun as well.

My suggestions:

- 'Think' about what are some of the needs of your organization + interest of employees, and then choose a topic - relevance is very important.

- You may consider topics such as 'values, ethics, trust' etc., as well as topics related to behavior - attitude, assertiveness, etc.

- Dip into 'Panchatantra, Amar Chitra Katha, Aesop's Fables', etc. for the topics suggested above and use storytelling as the means of communication.

- The CW Games are coming up - facts, figures, champions, records, events, etc. could be interesting to share.

- Use your creativity - change the format - design a simple quiz on a particular topic.

- Get employees to use their right brain too... they could put down their thoughts on the given topic/subject by drawing them... chart paper and colors... and then express themselves.

- You could also get employees to compose a small jingle on an appropriate topic and sing it out... divide them into small groups for this kind of activity.

- Use the Experiential Learning methodology... conduct some simple games through which you can draw out lessons relevant to the chosen topic; at times, do it just for fun as well!!

Recommend avoiding the following topics:

- Politics
- Bollywood
- Gender-related stuff (discriminatory)

Net, net, think differently... do things differently so that the activity becomes engaging and fun for the employees, helps you develop as a professional, and achieves the objectives of the organization.

Trust you may find some of the inputs useful.

Warm Regards,

Lt Col (Retd) Sumant Khare

Hi Priyanka,

It's good to hear that organizations have started with sessions like these. Here are some tips through which you can make the sessions interesting and entertaining:

1. Give case studies on communication skills and keep prizes for the best solution.
2. Play management games on communication, have group discussions, and conduct article reviews.
3. Most importantly, provide them with inputs on listening skills. This will surely benefit you and your organization.
4. Play some puzzles on communication-related skills.

Hi,

Hey, I knew this since I had received a message about the same. But, to be honest, I never thought of incorporating that into the training sessions.

Thanks for sharing.

Then, look how far the love of God will take you:
L-O-V-E-O-F- G-O-D
12 + 15 + 22 + 5 + 15 + 6 + 7 + 15 + 4 = 101%
Therefore, one can conclude with mathematical certainty that:
While hard work and knowledge will get you close, and attitude will get you there, it's the love of God that will put you over the top!
Have a nice day.

Hi Priyanka, good day to you! Find out what interests your organization, identify the areas where your personnel lag behind, prepare a PowerPoint presentation, and present your ideas while raising questions in the session. Have an interactive session so that each individual can contribute their ideas.
