Dear Manoj
Your question is not specific. However, handling union depends on situations and conditions.
Union and its members are not aliens. They are our colleagues in the company.
HR should treat them as colleagues subject to service regulations or standing orders etc.
Whenever HR come across any conflict situations, it should be handled properly within a framework of the company policy and statutory regulations. Proper handling comes by experience.

In a unionized as well as non unionized work atmosphere problem arises when union/workmen representatives wants to exercise their authorities (not duties) and want to show that they belong a special class and oppose every decision of the management

No matter How good words in theory members in this forum suggest, UNION people follow a simple rule--For the Muscle Power, Of the muscle power, By the Muscle Power. For Union Settlement, you have to Pay Bribe to Union Leaders just like our Politicians and by now if you are a Indian Citizen you wud surely know how big their mouths really are! It is similar to extortion in most cases. And if you fail to settle the issues, you will be inviting bigger Political Whale Sharks to HELP YOU OUT!!!!!....Yes if the UNION is not very strong in numbers its a bit easy to handle ......Else you had it bcoz for them you are not an employee buy MANAGEMENT Itself!!!!...I have been witness to HR Top Brass (VPHR, DIRECTOR HR Etc) regularly falling sick with viral flu on Important Union Meeting Days.....afterall Its only Money and Favours to Union Leaders & Affliates that ultimately gets the things settled...All the best to you!.......rgrds
