Shared Washroom Woes: How Do You Address a Colleague's Messy Habits?

Deepali Gulati
Hi All,

I am working with a mid-size firm, and we have a combined washroom. One of our male employees creates a mess in the washroom. I have given him two verbal warnings, but he continues to repeat the behavior.

The office boys also get frustrated when they have to perform the janitorial tasks repeatedly.

Please advise on how to address this issue as it is now becoming a hygiene concern.

Regards,
Deepali

I totally agree with Smith. Just make a note on the toilet notice board and hang it there. Since you have already spoken to that employee, just inform him about the need for cleanliness in front of 4-5 people. In this situation, you need to be direct but gentle. Clearly address the cleanliness issue without losing your temper; this approach will be beneficial. Clearly state the cleanliness issue, and he will feel ashamed in front of others.

This is a common issue for places with common toilets. It is always advisable to put a notice about basic things in the toilet.

Issue an HR Memo addressing all regarding cleaning and hygiene in restrooms. Request individuals to bring to notice those who do not take care of these matters; this will be an indirect indication for them. If they still do not understand, talk to them in public and ask them to learn these basic things. Be polite and professional while talking in public to ensure they do not feel offended.

I am sure this approach will work.

Hi,

This person needs training. Perhaps he is either careless or genuinely doesn't know the civilized way of using the facility. In case he is careless and has not bothered to take your warning seriously, you might wish to escalate the matter to higher management for issuing him a stern message. However, in the other case (he doesn't know the civilized way of using the facility), please ask discreetly another male colleague who is respected for his attitude and persona in your organization to help train him in the use of this common facility.

Hope one of these will work.

Regards,

Deepak
