How Can I Transition to an HR Role Without Direct Experience but With Qualifications?

sampadabhanage
Hi everybody,

I am Sampada, a new group member. I am finding it very interesting to read all the doubts/queries/requirements shared by you. It's a good learning process for me as I have recently completed my Diploma in HR from Wellingkar Institute.

Presently, I am working in UltraTech Cement Limited (Aditya Birla Group) for the last 2 years as an assistant cum Secretary to the Assistant Vice President (Finance). I am now looking forward to getting a break in HR. Unfortunately, I am not receiving any calls; the hurdle is experience. I have more than 5 years of experience as an assistant, but it is not in HR (I have worked in MIS, Service Dept, Finance).

I would like to know what I should do to get a job in HR. I do not want to continue in my current position, but due to financial problems, I cannot leave the job either. I also aspire to do an MBA/PG Diploma in HR. However, due to financial constraints, I am currently focused on securing a good job in HR first.

Please guide me.

The problem you are facing is your work experience. Though you have your education done in the HR field, since experience counts more than studying, organizations may not be very keen to take you into HR. But you can try to start from the lowest level in an organization and then build your way up. For that, you have to assure your interviewer that even though you have experience in finance, you can still be an asset to the company in the field of HR as well.

Cite some instances from your personal experiences where you tackled an HR-related issue smartly. By doing so, you can present your case strongly as an HR professional and inform them that you realized you are well-suited for HR, which led you to take up a course in HR.

Hi,

You can try approaching some banks or companies in the financial sector to work as an HR professional. They will be more than happy to hire a person with HR qualifications and finance experience. Good luck! Let me know what happens.

Take care,

Hello there,

I am in the same boat and seeking a job change. The problem is the conversion of armed forces experience into corporate experience. Is there anybody who can suggest a remedy?
