Confused About My Pay Scale and Allowances – Can Someone Break It Down for Me?

rashmivkulkarni
Hi all,

I have received an appointment letter stating a basic salary of 6000 per month. It mentions a pay scale of 6000-150-7200-200-8800 with an 80% allowance. Could someone please explain what this means in simple terms? What will the person's total salary be for a month in this case?

Hi, 6000-150-7200-200-8800 (This is your scale and it depends on your grade (Executive, Senior Executive, or Manager belonging to various grades).

Explanation

Start at 6000. Every year for 8 years, your basic salary shall increase by Rs 150/year until it reaches 7200.

Year 1: 6000 + 150 = 6150
Year 2: 6150 + 150 = 6300
Year 3: 6300 + 150 = 6450
Year 4: 6450 + 150 = 6600
Year 5: 6600 + 150 = 6750
Year 6: 6750 + 150 = 6900
Year 7: 6900 + 150 = 7050
Year 8: 7050 + 150 = 7200

Hence, the first span is 8 years. After reaching 7200, for another eight years, your basic salary will increase by Rs 200/year until it reaches 8800. Calculate in a similar way for the range of 7200 to 8800. Therefore, the second span is also 8 years.

After reaching 8800, according to me, you shall be placed in a new grade. The total span is 16 years.

THIS ONLY REFERS TO YOUR BASIC SALARY AND NOT OTHER COMPONENTS OF SALARY (E.G., HRA, MEDICAL), SO ONE CANNOT ASCERTAIN YOUR TOTAL SALARY FROM THIS.

Dear Kulkarni,

It can also go like this, starting with Rs. 6000 as a basic salary, and your increment is fixed at Rs. 150 (single increment). Based on your performance, management can either give one increment (i.e., Rs. 150) or two increments (i.e., Rs. 300), and continue until you reach Rs. 7200. Once you cross Rs. 7200, you will move into the next slab of Rs. 200 increment. To calculate your salary, your basic pay is Rs. 6000, and allowances at 80%, which is 80% of Rs. 6000 (i.e., Rs. 4800). So, your total emoluments will be Rs. 6000 + Rs. 4800 = Rs. 10,800 per month.

Hope this is clear.

Thanks,

I think this type of scale structure is normally used in the government. Sweta has explained it very briefly and practically, so thanks to Sweta.

Hi,

The amount after your basic is shown as your increment amount (either single or double) until you reach your next level, e.g., starting basic Rs. 6000-150-7200. Your next incremental amount will change only after you reach 7200.

Hope this is clear to you.

Hi Sree,

Thanks for your information. The above you have said is absolutely correct in this case. I personally got it clarified from the management about this structure, and their reply was also the same as what you have explained. The scale is structured from a society that manages a college here. So they have this type of pay structure.

Thanks once again for your insight.

RV.

Hi Guys,

Can anyone explain this,

-------------------

Rs. 15,600-39,100 (PB No.3) Grade Pay Rs. 5,400 Gross pay P.M. at the minimum of the scale: Rs. 30,450/- + HRA, Transport Allowance, etc.

-------------------

At the minimum, the basic will be Rs. 15,600. So how does the gross become Rs. 30,450? I'm assuming the gross includes the DA only because they talk about HRA, transport, etc., separately. So, is DA almost 100% of basic? I could be wrong; please clarify.

Thanks, Nagesh
