How Do You Keep Mid-Age Employees Motivated in Their Busy Schedules?

Dear Friends,

Motivation is an important tool for employees to keep working on their tight schedules. However, it becomes difficult to apply motivation tools to mid-age employees. They may not be as easily motivated because they have already experienced it. Can you suggest how we can motivate them? Your valuable views are welcomed.

Dear Chandra Bhushan,

Can you arrange the following things for the motivation of your mid-aged employees:

1. At mid-age, generally, everybody becomes more practical and concerned with more money and future safety. Try to arrange monetary incentives for the assignments they have finished, and it can be arranged quarterly.

2. Declare the best worker of the month and put his name displayed on the office notice board for the next whole month until the second name appears. The boss should have a cup of coffee with him one day. If someone is the best worker for three consecutive months, the office can offer him a 7/8 days leave.

3. Arrange study insurances for the kids of office employees and declare that your office will have a 5% job placement for the children of your office staff.

These can be helpful. In fact, the mid-aged staff do not move with any fantasy; rather, they are more practical about the reality of the world. That's why the general motivating tools do not work much with them. They bear a different look at the world.

Thanks.

Dear friend, I wish to add the following comments for Mrs. Sastry.

Inhibitions Due to Experience and Age

Even in government departments, job security is fading. I am working in a public sector undertaking. Even though there are many labor-friendly laws, they are seldom used by individual employees, and unions are also not strong. In earlier years, bosses used to look into the welfare of employees by giving suitable postings/placements to hardworking, honest employees. Now, the mindset of bosses/officials has also changed. Narrow-minded, corrupt, favoritism, nepotism bosses' numbers are more now than ever before. Bosses with these mentalities favor only those with similar mentalities. That is why employees in mid-age develop a habit of a "save my skin" attitude, never preparing to take risks or try new ideas, and sit in a cocoon.
