Curious About SAP HR? Can Commerce Graduates Succeed Without Technical Skills?

john shyam
Hi all!

I have a query on SAP HR. Do I need some kind of technical knowledge to learn this course? If I had commerce for my graduation, can I still learn SAP? What are the disadvantages because this course costs above a lakh? Please guide me on this.

Yours truly,

Hi John,

Doing SAP would give you an added advantage if you plan to apply/seek a job in a company that has implemented SAP in their organization.

The fact is that very few companies have actually adopted SAP in the organization, though most of them are big and are worth working for. So if you are seeking a job in these particular organizations, you may have a preference over other candidates.

The important issue here is that the management generally picks the person who is excellent in their basic skills (HR, recruiting, appraisals, training, etc.). Only when they are faced with a dilemma of selecting one out of two or more equally good candidates does such additional qualification as SAP play a role.

Otherwise, once you join the company, they would provide you training on using the applications, which are quite easy for the end user, as they are basically designed keeping in mind an average employee. In case you are planning for a core HR job, SAP may give you an advantage, but it may not be worth the amount of money that institutes charge unless it guarantees a good job in a reputable company.

Hello Ajmal,

The above-stated query was from one HR officer who is currently working in a bank and wishes for a more exciting career with a year of experience in core HR and a desire to move on from there. How would you reframe your reply to that question? Thank you for the prompt reply. I appreciate that greatly.

Yours with warm regards,
John Shyam

Hi John,

Thank you for the query. If you are looking for SAP HR, I don't think technical knowledge is a must. However, I would always suggest that functional knowledge of the SAP package is going to be more useful.

Thank you for the reply, Murali.

By "functional," do you mean understanding what the package is put to use for? Right? Well, correct me if I am wrong.

And thank you for the reply.

Regards,
John Shyam
