Though Sunil says there is no difference, there are considerable differences. The differences can be attributed to the purpose they cater for. Definition: A seminar is a lecture or presentation delivered to an audience on a particular topic or set of topics that are educational in nature. It is usually held for groups of 10-50 individuals. A seminar is frequently held at a hotel meeting space or within an office conference room.

A workshop is a series of educational and work sessions. Small groups of people meet together over a short period of time to concentrate on a defined area of concern.

Differences Between Seminar, Workshop, Symposium, and Conference

The differences are as follows:

• In a seminar, there is a speaker who gives a lecture highlighting the scope, importance, benefits, and limitations of the respective topic. After the lecture, the audience can ask questions.

• In a workshop, simulation exercises related to the topic are conducted by the speaker, which means learning while doing the work.

• In a symposium, group discussions on the related topic take place among a galaxy of speakers, with a mediator coordinating the discussion. After the discussion, the audience can ask questions via a slip through the mediator.

• Last but not least, a conference is like an official meeting where speakers directly interact with the audience. It can be described as a brainstorming session.

I go to a lot of these kinds of meetings, and I agree that the terminology is pretty confused and confusing. I don't think anyone can clearly distinguish between them. None of these have hard and fast rules, though.

Seminars:

Workshop:
A workshop has the sense of being a relatively small event with all parties involved in the discussion (although this is not always the case). Workshops tend to be smaller and more intense than seminars. This format often involves students practicing their new skills during the event under the watchful eye of the instructor.

Symposium:
A symposium suggests that more than one person is speaking. A symposium is typically a more formal or academic gathering, featuring multiple experts delivering short presentations on a particular topic.

Conference:
A conference is pretty general and, in fact, could mean something with thousands of participants or something with just a few participants. None of these are hard and fast rules, though. Conferences often feature keynote presentations delivered to all attendees, as well as multiple break-out sessions. Attendees often expect to receive information about industry trends and developments.
