Torn Between a Big Pay Raise and Staying with a Reputable Brand – What Would You Do?

Hi Vamsi,

I have received a job offer with a better salary package, providing a 42% increase compared to my current pay. However, the company I am currently employed with holds a strong brand reputation. I am truly torn between staying for the brand recognition or accepting the pay raise and moving forward.

Considering the growth prospects within my current organization seem to be limited due to its large size, progression might be slow. It's worth noting that I will be completing one year with my current company next month.

I seek your advice on this matter.

It is simple. Don't go for brand name, money, compensation, or hike, whatever you call it. See where you can learn new things, where you can explore, and where you can grow. This is important; the rest will follow. If you gain knowledge, then it may happen that both brand and money may knock on your door at once, being as one.

Though you seem to have made up your mind, I have the following point for you to ponder:

- What stage of your career are you in? If you are in the early stages, the value a "branded" organization can add to your profile is substantial. Though your growth prospects are limited, if your organization can give you the opportunity to learn and add value to yourself, this benefit will go a long way in the future.

- Smaller organizations offer higher salaries because of the risk a candidate takes in joining them. Though learning prospects may be good, it will be purely up to the individual to balance the job versus learning.

I suggest that you look at:

- The job security in the prospective new employer.
- New job functions.
- Culture in the current and prospective employer organizations.

Though money is important, it is not everything.

Think seriously, what should be the parameter to choose any company? According to me, it should be:

1. Money saving
2. Time saving
3. Future security
4. Earn reputation
5. Job satisfaction

If your new company provides you with all of these, then join; if not, do not join. The last company you worked for gave you experience.

Consider:
1. Company working culture
2. Promotion and increment opportunities
3. Career stability
4. Reputation and job satisfaction proximity

If a new company offers only a slight increase in money, I do not recommend changing companies.

My honest suggestion to you would be to go for the salary hike rather than brand. You would get extra income as well as a better learning curve. Brand wouldn't give you anything; moreover, during a recession, the branded company retrenched more employees than the non-branded companies. Don't think, go ahead, grab the offer.

I'm sure you have made up your mind by now. But just for your information, when you are in the beginning stage of your career, brand name matters a lot. It is a value addition to your CV when you go hunting for another job. Don't keep jumping jobs. No recruiter would take that in a positive sense. They would think you've got stability issues. As per all views, brand does not matter so much. Go for that organization which gives you the learning prospect as well as money. In a big brand, the outline of company policy and work procedure is set. So, there is very little opportunity for learning as well as weightage of your view.
