Is HR Underappreciated? Share Your Thoughts on Recognition and Rewards in Our Field

This is one question that I often ponder about. Do you guys think HR fraternity is getting enough importance in the organization? Are you satisfied with your job as an HR and do you think you are getting enough rewards and recognition for the job done, or do you consider it to be a real thankless job? Has HR become merely a support function today, or is it still a function that supports the organization from falling? What do you think?

If your HR department is still not abolished in your company, and HR staff members are still paid their monthly salaries/annual increments along with other department staff, then, I do not know why one should ask this question. Do you want people to be thanking you for doing your duty for which you are paid?

What do you mean by 'importance'? Do you want all your employees to look at you as if HR is the most powerful department in your company?

You need to define 'importance'.

Why should you consider HR as a function that supports the company so that the company does not fall down? HR is not a side support to be so visible that everyone notices it every day and raises eyebrows.

HR is the foundation. It is inside the organization, penetrating every department, supporting everyone, but not visible to those who can't see beyond what is obvious.

HR does not need 'thanks' from employees, but their performance and competence for the organization's effectiveness.

HR does not need or expect importance. As the true representative of the employer, it only gives importance to other departments and the employees over there.

Jeev, don't get angry at what Nishant said. I will explain what he wants to say. He wants to say that, like in programming or a sales team, there are tangible results, so they receive open appreciation, frequent increments, and rewards.

Nishant, I got your message. People underestimate the HR job. In fact, they ask, "What is there in HR to work for?" There is no appreciation as such. Yes, but in the case of recruitment, we can receive appreciation if HR fulfills the need for manpower on time. Recruitment is the only function among all HR activities that can receive incentives for achieving targets.

I want to introduce myself first. I am Sowmya, working as a Senior HR Executive in a reputed offshore company. I agree with the comment 'HR need not expect thanks from employees,' but at the same time, my experience tells me to make employees feel appreciated for their job. Unlike other departments with clear results, we HR professionals don't have such Key Result Areas (KRAs) to measure. Our main work is to ensure employee satisfaction, so why can't we measure that by receiving thanks from employees, which reflects our work in turn? They need not vocalize it; at least they can show appreciation towards the HR department, helping us maintain our energetic levels.
