Exploring HR: How Can I Find Out If My Interests Align with a Company's Focus Areas?

There are many areas in HR, but companies concentrate only on a few. How will I come to know if my interest areas are present in the company I am applying to? Moreover, what are the general areas that every MNC has?

HR is truly a vast field, and so are most things in life that seem to have no end. However, in all companies, small or big, sourcing talent, salary negotiation (recruitment), employee relations/dispute handling, employee performance analysis, and statutory procedures (compensation & benefits) are some common activities of HR. It is up to you to decide which kind of job fascinates you. Good luck.

First of all, decide in which role you want to develop in the next 5-10 years:

HR - Core - KRAs:

- End-to-end recruitment
- Employee induction
- Employee retention
- Issuing offer/appointment letters
- Conducting joining formalities, etc.

HR - Generalistics - KRAs:

- Ensuring all legal compliance
- Adhering to statutory norms
- Overseeing overall HR processes
- Communication with various legal bodies such as the labour commissioner
- Knowledge of labor laws
- Handling industrial relations/public relations

Some companies also introduce an additional HR role, i.e., HR-Admin.

Nowadays, the HR department has been decentralized into more or less the structure discussed above. If anybody wants to specialize in HR core, they have to choose the HR-Core option as stated above. In general, all MNCs have more or less the same structure.

Thank you.

Thank you for such a valuable reply. However, at the starting level, what position should I aim for? For instance, at the fresher level, nobody directs us to any specialized field; I have to start as a trainee. I can only express my areas of interest... will that be acceptable? For example, I am interested in motivation and OD programs, as well as employee satisfaction. Nevertheless, I feel that phrasing it this way may come across as unprofessional.
