Safety Awareness Training Course Content

The content of a "Safety Awareness Training course" depends on the duration and the level of participants. Noted below are the contents that can be modified to suit your requirements.

• Impact of an accident (on you, your family, employer, government, society)
• Domino theory - (ancestry - fault of person - unsafe acts/conditions - accident - injury/damage)
• Modern techniques of accident prevention
• Use and abuse of personal protective equipment
• Housekeeping
• Fire protection
• Your role in accident prevention

Case studies, quizzes, and videos may be used effectively. If you can provide the exact requirements, I may be able to help further.

Dear Abhay,

Importance of Safety Training in Chemical Units

Imparting safety training at the start of a unit is quite beneficial. Being a chemical unit, before starting safety training, the trainer must know the safety aspects of all the raw materials, finished products, and processes. Safety in transporting, storage, and handling of these chemicals is important. It all depends on what chemicals you have.

There are three categories of employees - all of them require safety orientation. Even if you do not conduct a separate safety awareness course, indoctrination or safety orientation, as we usually refer to, is essential.

Types of Training Required

Later, they require three different types of training.

Helpers:
- Training for helpers in their local language.
- Impact of an accident (on you, your family, employer, government, society).
- Domino theory (ancestry - fault of the person - unsafe acts/conditions - accident - injury/damage).
- Hazard communication (Haz.com).
- What to do and what not to do for safety.
- Use and abuse of personal protective equipment.
- Housekeeping.
- Fire protection.
- Your role in accident prevention.

Operators:
Along with all the above, operators must be trained in safety aspects related to their specific job.

Supervisors:
For the added responsibility of supervisors, they require a higher level of safety training. Along with all the above topics, you may add:
- In an emergency.
- Reporting of accidents.
- First Aid fundamentals.
- Knowing your MSDS.

There are many things to be covered. Since it is only an awareness course, the trainer has to touch upon electrical safety, manual material handling, etc., which may not take much time, especially if a PowerPoint presentation is used effectively.

With the above, the awareness training may take a maximum of 5 hours of classroom time.

Dear Sir, Once again, thank you very, very much. This forum is alive because of people like you. I assure you that whatever knowledge about safety I gain from this forum, I will share with all so that achieving and maintaining a zero-accident status does not remain the privilege of some companies but becomes a standard for all companies in India.

Dear Abhay,

You may also add the following:

1. Incident Pyramid
2. Safety Ice Berg Chart
3. Major hazards and control measures including Chemical Handling, Work at height, Striking object, electricity, vehicle, Confined Space, Fire, etc.

With regards,
Dipil

Dear Dipil,

Now, can you please give me an idea of "how you will differentiate between basic safety awareness training and a regular training course, please?"

As per my understanding, it is as follows:

Basic Safety Awareness:

It should contain, at minimum, the following:
- Roles & Responsibilities towards safety
- It should cover all the hazards existing or that may arise in the plant.
- Emphasizing the concept that incidents mainly occur due to the unsafe acts of people.
- Emergency preparedness.
- Personal Protective Equipment
- Housekeeping, etc.

Surely, the training mode and topics will change depending on the audience. For a regular training course, it basically focuses on a topic. For example, if it's for Confined Space, that particular session will delve deeply into the safety aspects related to Confined Space.
