Is Free Pizza Worth the Risk? The Hidden Cost of Delivery Boy Exploitation

In The Times of India, there was an article/advertisement about Pizza delivery companies which guarantee you free pizza if they fail to deliver within the specified time (like 30 minutes). Have you ever wondered who pays for the free pizzas? Well, the delivery boy is made to pay for the pizza. They are paid such low wages, and the price of the pizza is deducted from their monthly wages, which can amount to up to 60% in some months (making it difficult for them to support their families). To deliver the pizzas, the delivery boys take high traffic risks as delivery becomes their priority. Their life and safety risks are neither considered by the Pizza Shop Management nor by the Pizza Delivery Boy himself. (They are more concerned with avoiding deductions from their salary).

If this type of exploitation is happening in your city's pizza logistics, we should stop using the home delivery system because one person may be risking their life to deliver our pizza. Is the life of an Indian citizen so cheap and without value? If the delivery is late, we are enjoying the free pizza at the expense of a poor delivery boy's hard-earned money. Is it fair or right on our part to do this?

As humans, please think about this issue. If you feel that this is wrong, please spread the message and consider not having pizzas delivered at home for free.

Good to hear about the initiative you have taken. I had also heard about a similar situation when I asked a delivery boy to deliver the pizza for free as he was already late and had given me the same reason for the delay.

It is a nice post; however, I'm afraid I do not agree with you. My brother himself was working with a pizza company, and once in a while, the deliveries did get delayed. But he was never fined or had his salary deducted for it. Yes, but if the delivery boys act smart and the delays occur often, then they are taken to task, which I agree is part of the work management.

When a person takes up such a job where he is required to do a specific task in a specific time, and he accepts it, it should become his priority. Why don't you reach the office on time daily, and if on a one-off chance you are late, you may be forgiven, but if you become habitual of becoming late, then you are taken to task by your seniors. At that time, you cannot give an excuse like, "I cannot risk my life to come to the office on time." These are discipline issues, and discipline has to be maintained in every organization, whether it is a pizza delivery company or an MNC.

Thank you for the information. However, we encountered a situation where the pizza delivery person arrived late. When we approached him, he informed us that the cost would not be deducted from his own pocket. If that were the case, who would expect them to cover the expenses, especially since they are already on low salary packages?

This is a misleading posting.

Reasons:
1. Delivery within 30/60 seconds applies to OTC sale.
2. How will there be vehicular traffic inside the pizza store?
3. No specific individual is involved in the supply chain, as it is teamwork.

HR people... aren't you thinking???????????
