Is a Degree or Real-World Experience More Crucial for Landing a Job at Top Companies?

Rashmi Tuteja
What is more important to get a job in a good company: Certificates/Degree from a reputed institute OR capability and experience??

In today's competitive job market, the criteria for securing a position in a reputable company have evolved. While having certificates or a degree from a well-known institute can open doors, the significance of actual capability and experience should not be underestimated.

Employers often seek candidates who not only possess the necessary qualifications but also demonstrate relevant skills and a track record of success in similar roles. Practical experience can showcase a candidate's ability to perform tasks effectively and handle challenges in the workplace.

Therefore, a combination of educational credentials from a reputed institution and proven capability through experience is likely to enhance one's prospects of landing a job in a good company. It is the blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills that can set a candidate apart and make them a valuable asset to any organization.

Both are equally important to gain entry into any reputed company as they have their own policies for recruitment. They have certain criteria where candidates below a certain percentage of marks are not allowed, regardless of their abilities. When entering a second job as an experienced person, the degree and marks become a secondary concern. That is my opinion.

Agreed to the point that both qualification and experience go hand in hand. We may say that qualification is like a passport which we can't travel without. Experience is something that comes from employment. Obviously, for the first job, education is one of the important parameters for getting shortlisted, but it's not the only and the most crucial factor. The most crucial factors are, of course, your knowledge/grip over the subject, communication skills, and, above all, your aptitude.

Hope this makes it clear.

Cheers!

Dear Rashmi Tuteja,

Both are like each side of a coin or a bill. To get started, you need qualifications. However, to benchmark in your career, you need experience. It is like air and water; we need both to live.

Thanks, Sandeep and Akash. This question arises because if we notice the current trend in the market, especially in HR, in every job posting, you will see the requirement: "MBA from a reputed B-School only" even if the opening is for experienced candidates.

Dear Rasmi,

In simple, qualification will open doors for you in any industry, and experience will provide you with the degree of survival in life. Therefore, both are necessary for life.

Best wishes

Murali, I accept the thing that both qualification and experience play a key role in getting a job. In my opinion, they first consider experience because an old patient is better than a new doctor.

Of course, qualification and experience are both equally important to get into a reputed organization. I have a different view on this. More than qualification, it is the experience, attitude, and good networking that help individuals to secure a position in a respected organization. Hope you find this answer helpful.

Actually, from my point of view, I divide experience and qualifications out of 100%. I give 51% importance to qualifications and 49% to experience. This is because to show your talent and experience in any organization, it is important to enter that organization first. However, most organizations consider qualifications first to recruit the candidate. If someone doesn't have good qualifications but has experience, most companies may avoid that candidate.

Your question is very good because I am also facing the same problem, mostly in the case of HR. In my point of view, until someone gets a job, how can they be experienced? If someone is given a chance to prove themselves, then they can demonstrate their skills and gain experience. The most important part of getting the first opportunity is your qualifications. Without appropriate qualifications, you won't be able to pass an interview.

I hope you understand.

It is definitely the qualification which is most essential. Having a good qualification with a good percentage of marks leads you to enter any MNCs these days. For a fresher, the percentage of marks scored counts. Basically, it is only up to a certain age (say, a maximum of 35 years) that our brains absorb book knowledge. Later comes the practical work experience. Our brains are later preoccupied with various day-to-day activities. I suggest all young individuals keep studying as much as possible. Later, you can gain experience by applying whatever you have learned.
