Exploring the Differences Between Recruitment and Core HR: Can Recruiters Transition Easily?

Hi all,

I have a great doubt.

1st question: How is recruitment different from core HR? I mean to ask that recruitment is considered as one aspect of HR. We all understand it in this way. However, some MNCs have separated both. So, I want to know the recent views on this matter.

2nd question: Can a recruiter's experience get me a job in HR? People say that if you have recruitment experience, you would be able to transition into HR later. Is it true? Currently, I am working as an ITES recruiter. Should I also gain experience as an IT recruiter to secure a good job in HR, or should I wait for an opportunity as an HR Executive/HR Generalist itself?

Hi Minakshi,

Recruitment is only a part of HR functions. When compared to core HR opportunities, recruitment opportunities are vast in MNCs. So, once you enter and gain experience, you can opt for a new role in HR. Recruitment experience counts, and it would be a way to get into core HR in MNCs.

If you want to get into Core HR, then opt for a company that has both functions. Core HR includes:

1. Recruitments & Selection
2. Induction, Training, and Development
3. Compensation Management
4. Performance Management Systems
5. Career Management (Coaching, Counseling)
6. Industrial Relations
7. Organizational Development

In simple terms, Core HR includes all HR functions, or HR activities begin from the employee entering the organization until their exit from the organization. Hope this information gives you a gist of Core HR.

Hi Minakshi,

The reason for differentiation could be that recruitment is not solely the job of HR professionals; rather, it involves technical people to conduct certain technical rounds. In my opinion, recruitment is a mixture of all the associates to assess behaviors in different styles. On the other hand, activities like competencies, performance appraisals, training needs, and so on are core HR functions where other domains do not play a role.

Recruitment is an integral part of Human Resources. Many companies have different recruitment departments, but it's not different from core HR functions. Companies have various departments such as recruitment, training and development, and employee relations. All these departments are separated on a functional basis; the main reason is to simplify the work and coordinate with each other.

As you have experience in recruitment, you can join a company as a recruiter. I hope your query is resolved.
