How to Handle a Job Transition Without a Joining Letter or Payroll Record?

Dear Sir,

I did not receive any joining or appointment letter at my current workplace. Also, I am not on the payroll; I receive my salary by cheque, which I deposit into my account. The only proof I have of working for this company is my salary deposits.

I have recently received a better job offer, and my new employer is requesting a release order. They have asked how I joined the company without a joining letter.

What should I do to handle this situation? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a good relationship with your present company, then ask for any kind of proof if they are not providing you the joining letter. For example, on the company's letterhead, you can request to have your current working status documented.

Thank you for your reply, but I am afraid because there is a lot of politics going on. My immediate boss is always trying to get me fired. Our company is very small, with only 2 office staff at the factory, including me – 3 working staff, 6 operators, 3 drivers, and one director. Due to my immediate boss, my reputation is not as good. I am retired from the Indian Air Force as an automobile engineer, and that affects him a lot because of my 20 years of experience.

I am not so concerned about the appointment letter as I know many companies that do not provide one. However, I am concerned about how you are not on the payroll. For the company to issue a cheque to you, you must be on the payroll somewhere. If not, the company will have problems with their accounts. I have interviewed many candidates without an appointment letter from their previous employer. I do have a small concern about that, but after all, what matters most are the questions I ask and how they answer.

My advice to you is to try to ask for an appointment letter in the future for any job you attend. However, there are certain companies that do not provide one. But at the very least, they should provide you with an employment contract.
