Hi Deepti,
It was a very useful bit of information on the transfers. I agree with the procedure but on a constructive note, have my reservations as to the approach of an employee to his /her boss for requesting a change in job. Assuming a case where the employee is extremely good in his/her present role and is of great value to his / her department. Would it possible for him to get a release into some other department? It could be a struggle and in many cases though the employee might be very interested to shift, the boss might not agree ultimately ending up with a missed opportunity. We have experienced such situations in our organization many a times especially when it involves highly skilled people who are scarce. So to handle this what we introduced is, we advertise an internal opening. The interested employees apply. HR interviews them and matches the fit. Then we (HR)approach the department head with a recommendation and highlight the development opportunity for the employee / s who have applied and assure them of replacements. All department bosses are not like minded many a times and this could be at the cost of an employee's career growth.
Please feel free to share your opinion on this.

Balaji
