Dear Sasmita, I mistook your question for an answer. Anyways, in my knowledge, HR should be:

1. A Role Model (in every respect, with a few of them being: interpersonal skills, communication (both verbal and written), analytical and problem-solving skills, should be a good listener, etc.).
2. Leadership Qualities (Autocratic style not preferred).
3. Sound Domain Knowledge.
4. Negotiation Skills.
5. Sound Organizational and Strategic Skills.

Regarding my graduation in 2002, I have experience in different fields. Recently, I have completed an MBA in HR. When I attend the interview, if the interviewer asks about my experience, what should I do?
Senor_daniel
Hi Deepa, I would probably look primarily for transparency or honesty, passion for the required field, practical application of knowledge in HR dynamics, and lastly, but definitely not the least, a person with good interpersonal and intrapersonal communication.

The Importance of Comprehensive HR Qualities

With all the training skills sessions that are prevalent in the industry, a nominal set of characteristics will not work anymore in looking for an HR professional. What is required is a below-the-surface approach and something I'd like to call an 'experience-knowledge-passion ratio of quotient'.

I would look for these 5 qualities:

1) Empathy
2) Good at building bonds with people (up to an appropriate level)
3) Excellent communication and convincing skills

5) Willingness to create a strong acceptable culture in the organization.

Hi Sasmita,

I would recommend the 5 P's as the qualities required for an HR Recruiter:

1. Patience
2. Position
3. Potentiality
4. Professionalism
5. Perfection

These qualities are essential for excelling in the field of human resources recruitment. Each "P" represents a key aspect that a successful HR recruiter should possess. By focusing on developing these qualities, one can enhance their effectiveness and success in this role.

I would suggest that, apart from having sound knowledge of the HR domain, the following are the quintessential attributes an HR Professional ought to have:

1. A People’s Person (An efficient motivator/mentor/coach/trainer)
2. Patient (Instilled with an appropriate level of temperament)
3. An Efficient Communicator (Engrossed with strong inter and intrapersonal skills)
4. A Dynamic Change Agent
5. Entrepreneurial Attitude (Strategic Partner)

Thank you.

Key Qualities of Effective Recruiters

Effective recruiters need to represent the employer brand with exemplary presentation skills and conduct, leading to stakeholder and customer delight with a shared vision and sensitivity. It is essential to have clarity on organizational processes, structure, culture, values, and policies, along with change management skills when needed. Furthermore, recruiters should possess facilitation skills to engage with management, candidates, and agencies to foster effective collaboration.

Clarity on Role Descriptions and Competencies

Additionally, clarity on role descriptions, competencies, career paths, compensation policies, and effective negotiation skills with fairness is crucial. Recruiters should facilitate interviewing with listening and counseling skills, demonstrating sound judgment, creativity, and assertiveness while prioritizing the organization's interests and values without compromising on quality.

Commitment and Induction Process

It is important for recruiters to make honest and viable commitments/offers and facilitate a sound induction process that leads to trust, employee engagement, productivity, and high retention. By proactively achieving quality, time, and cost deliverables without wastage, rework, low productivity, employee dissatisfaction, and attrition, recruiters can contribute significantly to organizational success.

I hope you find this information valuable.

Kshantaram

It depends on which profile you look at. Having job experience in the relevant field is most important. If the position is for handling the IR part of the organization and you select someone from the recruitment part, then it will be worthless.

Secondly, the candidate should have people skills, good negotiation abilities, convincing power, and many more.

Please provide more context if needed.

Dear Sasmita,

I am not a management guy, but I have some points in my kitty.

1) Cheerful: Give her a situation and check her humor. Further, when the selected HR will take interviews or interact with people, she/he should be able to make the interviewed guy feel comfortable. A cheerful nature helps a lot. Also, if a guy feels comfortable with the interviewer, he is more likely to speak the truth.

2) Straightforward: Ask her a situational question like "bla bla bla... So, will you recommend firing the guy?" Expect the answer to be a harsh step but necessary in the name of the company.

3) Learning Ability: In this world, even if somebody is a highly technical IIT electrical engineer or from IIM Ahmedabad, they only know 0.000001% of the entire knowledge in the world. So, it's not necessary to know everything, but a person should be eager to learn.

4) Honest: I have a situation on this, but it's very long, so I don't want to bore you.

5) No Egos: Give her a question with two answers. If you stick to the opposite one of hers and try to push her to go with your answer, if she does, she is not egoistic.

6) Communication Skills: It matters least for me. If you have good Hindi and presentable English, that will do. English can always be improved. In this world, only those people who have ideas have contributed, so the most important thing is ideas instead of communication skills. Communication skills can always be developed.

Regarding all these points, I have some situations. A long time ago, I dumped them, so if needed, I can dig them back.

Attri

Ability to understand the current scenario (within and outside the organization) is the most important quality, I think, for an HR professional to be proactive and reactive promptly.

I agree with what you have tried to say, but Mr. Mohan has talked about empathy. If an HR person has all the technical skills and is hardworking, yet does not possess a positive attitude, they cannot be a good HR person. HR stands for Human Resources, so a person who is not humane is not fit for HR. A person should be tactful yet humble; they must apply empathy, not sympathy.

I hope you agree.

5. You should also know a third-party agency that can do the candidate's previous employment verification.

6. You should know how to verify the original documents by asking the candidate to show the original documents.

7. You should know how to type and forward an email.

In my opinion and experience, I would like to see the following qualities in an HR person:

1. They should have excellent human relations skills - a people person.
2. They should be a 'change agent' - embrace and lead change (which is permanent).
3. Should be a good listener with excellent analytical and negotiation skills.
4. Should be empathetic, enabling them to understand problems - once a problem/issue is understood, it's easier to come up with alternate solutions.
5. They should have excellent communication and articulation skills.

Yes, Snarad is correct, I agree. Today, HR is of utmost importance. However, not all companies have realized it. HR personnel must have empathy, but sometimes strong decisions need to be made.

Qualities of an HR Person

Qualities of an HR person include being empathetic, possessing good oral and written communication skills, having a strong theoretical knowledge about HR, and understanding the laws of the land (statutory compliance) regarding labor. An HR professional should also focus on minute details akin to a perfect photographer, be proficient in operating MS Office tools, and exhibit drive, passion, and a never-say-die spirit. These qualities come together to form a complete individual.

I completely agree with Mr. Jagdish because empathy is one of the components possessed by HR, but it is not the whole essence of HR.

Hi friends, all the points narrated above are essential for the successful functioning of an HR professional, and most of us are aware of them. However, I would like to add a few points which are generally not discussed. The Head of HRD is a very important person in any organization, and he/she can do a lot for the betterment of the staff and workers, and at the same time can be a key instrument for the all-round development of the organization. The points are:

1. Be a good human being.
2. Understand the problems of the workers and find ways and means to mitigate their hardships.
3. Benefit of the doubt should always be granted to the less privileged.
4. Workers are the backbone of the organization, and they should be given due importance.
5. The last but most important point is, before we initiate any action, we should be 100 percent sure that whatever we do is in the best interest of the organization/company that employs us.

Regards,
Pavithran.

Pegging Qualities for HR Roles

Shall we peg qualities to five? What if they are less or more? My view is this: I have two that are paramount. They are:

- Good grip of your domain
- Good communication skills

If one has good knowledge of the environment and is in tune with current trends, along with good communication skills, they, in turn, possess some of the qualities already mentioned above. The ability to manage people and resources has been acquired. It is simple logic that before an utterance is made, it has been processed in the brain. Good negotiating skills have been taken care of.
