Is It Right To Rejoin Your Previous Company

vijeta.mba
Hello!

I would like to know if it is right to join your previous company after having a gap of around 1 year.

Depend on the last time situation and your requirement. But, as per my own idea, no, no, never use this option if there is no way.

My friend is a telecom engineer. For the past year, he has been searching for a job. Now, he is contemplating rejoining his previous company or pursuing an MBA. Can anyone please suggest what would be the better option.

Hi Vijeta,

The telecom industry is doing well now. Please ask your friend to write to me at trainer.consult@gmail.com.

Having no job and then rejoining the same company is not a good idea. It's better to look for other opportunities if he is already working.

Thank you.
Autumn Jane
The decision to rejoin the same company really depends on the circumstances under which you left in the first place. If you departed on good terms, with valid reasons, and performed well during your tenure, I am confident the company would welcome you back. Conversely, if the opposite is true, the company may not be open to considering your return.

I have observed numerous cases where former employees who resigned later came back to the company to assume higher positions. The additional exposure and experience gained elsewhere often bring added value to the company.

Dear Autumn,

But only in a few cases. In most instances, the same person cannot adjust themselves among colleagues. Sorry, sir, do not mind. I have seen many cases like this. Returning to a previous company after one year always has a 90% negative effect and only a 10% positive effect.

Thanks

I don't understand why you can't join your previous company once again. There are lots of advantages, viz, you know the work culture, environment, and people very well. This is the place where you reinvent yourself, and you can see the impact also. If you are joining in a senior position, you know what should be/can be done to improvise on certain matters.

As long as perceptions of the colleagues are concerned, it is a case of seeking others' approval. If you belong to that personality, this will remain true even if you join work at a new place. Justify your action to yourself, and the outcome will justify the rest all.

Thank you, Giriamitha,

You have provided a different perspective. I believe you are correct, but the challenge lies in how to address the situation with colleagues. My friend is experiencing some nervousness when interacting with them.

I completely agree with Girimatha. However, this holds true only if they ask you to join them back. If you express that you would like to rejoin them, there will be many issues that may arise (such as salary not being matched, them taking advantage of you, etc.). Friends, please correct me if I am wrong.

Dear Vijeta,

It is important that we provide as much information as possible about the scenario to receive more effective responses. Additionally, it is preferable to search the web for information that is already available and then ask precise questions. This approach saves a lot of time in clarifying the scenario after someone inquires.

For instance, there was a piece by Jackowski on the subject in question, but unfortunately, the link no longer exists. However, there was also a piece in The Hindu newspaper back in 2004 titled "Rejoining old employer."

I hope your friend finds this information useful.

Have a nice day.

Hi Vijeta,

I am sorry. I think my response sounded very ideological. My only intention was to convey that it is a professional decision; hence, even any emotional problems can be handled professionally. For example, you can say to your friends that you have been promised a salary hike or you just thought that you will do some parallel education, and in order to do that, it is better to be in a known environment. Again, I am making a point that you should justify yourself, and the rest will fall into place.

Thanks, Mr. Simhan. I also liked the articles, and they really help you professionally justify your decision.

Hi Vijeta,

Is the only reason he is going back because he is unable to secure a job in any other firm? I'm also curious to know about his reasons for leaving...
vijeta.mba
That's right, till date he is not able to get a job; that is the only reason he is thinking of rejoining his previous company. The reason was both personal and professional, but he has only disclosed the personal reason to his organization. He is married, and at that time, his wife was living alone in Delhi, so he decided to leave the job. Unfortunately, his organization was not willing to provide him with a transfer.

Hi Giriamitha,

You are right on your point; you have given the positive points, and I appreciate that. I think before taking any decision, we should consider both positive and negative points.

Thanks
