Understanding Employee Categories: Are Short-Term Workers Part-Time or Temporary?

federica
Hi all,

I'm a junior in the HR field. I need guidance from all of you.

Currently, I am confused about the differences between temporary employees and part-timers. I am working in an F & B company. There are two categories of employees, which include Full-Time and Part-Time.

Our part-time employees do not enjoy benefits, and they only work in our company for less than 3 months (until they decide to leave our company). Their daily working hours are the same as our permanent employees. However, they can resign anytime with a 24-hour notice, as they like.

Question: Is this type of employee actually considered as part-time or temporary?

Thank you.

Hi, Please refer to the following explanations:

a) Part-time jobs can be handled for a part of the normal working hours. However, people working every day the regular hours for two to three months are not considered part-time. Anybody who comes and works daily for 2-4 hours is a part-time employee. Categories could include the stores assistant, billing clerk, and part-time lecturer. Part-time jobs may be for any number of days in a year. Basically, these are the types of jobs that do not require being manned for a full 8 or 9 working hours of the day.

b) A temporary job is a job that is purely temporary in nature and concludes after the job is over. It may also be a trial job to test before taking an employee on a permanent basis. However, this will be for the full working hours. Temporary jobs can also be seasonal, like workers in a tea estate, sugar factory, or fruit pulp industry. Employees working for 2-3 months are not part-time but temporary.

Hope this is clear.
