Wedding Leave Policies: How Many Days Off Do Companies Typically Offer?

Are there any common practices in any organization where an employee is paid leave for their wedding? If so, I would like to know the maximum days given under this scenario and the general rules for this.

Please understand that there is no law regarding these matters. Even for directors' family members' weddings, no company will declare a paid holiday. It is important to understand that as HR professionals, we must act to improve productivity, and employees should not always expect HR to only bring privileges.

I am working in Oman. Here, three days of paid leave are allowed for marriage with the proof of a marriage certificate as per the law. However, in India, there is no such law. In this company, a policy can be implemented for at least 3 days of paid leave for marriage, depending on the management's decision.

In Oman, are paid holidays allowed for all 4 marriages (P.S.: 4 marriages are permitted in Sharia law)? What about females?

The practices for such leaves differ from company to company and industry to industry. We provide five days of paid holiday for marriage for all of our associates. Ours is an IT company in Chennai. Hope this resolves your query.

A company can introduce a policy of leaves given to employees on the occasion of their wedding as a part of employee welfare. This may be one of the best practices followed by a company to boost employee morale. There is no maximum or minimum number of leaves granted to an employee, and there is also no obligation for the employer towards it. It is at the company's discretion to allow an employee's leaves for the same. You can still give leaves from 3-7 days as required. But don't forget to mention that employees availing these kinds of leaves should have remaining leaves in their leave account and should not be habitual leave-taking employees.

Hi, five days of paid leave may be excessive; in other words, senior employees who have served for three or more years in the company could be eligible for it. A nice alternative could be offering special gifts such as a traveler's bag or a tour package, along with permission for a seven-day leave. If the individual already has seven days of leave, there is no issue; otherwise, it would result in loss of pay.

As far as I am concerned, there is no paid leave granted to employees for their weddings or any other cases. If they are eligible for Earned Leave or Casual Leave, they can avail themselves of the same. If not, it will be considered as Loss of Pay (LOP) only.

As far as I am concerned, there is no such provision in the leave rules of any labor laws. If anyone wants to avail leave, they can utilize their balance of earned leave or casual leave.

Hi Veena, It's true there are no laws as such to permit paid leaves for an employee's wedding. But it depends on the company's policy. Even if a policy is made, there will be eligibility for any employee to have completed one year of his/her service in the respective organization. Then, an employee will be permitted paid leave for about 15 days or as many days according to the company policy.

In the subject line of your query, you have used the words ‘Paid Holiday,’ while the actual query is about ‘Special Leave for Self Wedding.’ The contradictory words used in the query have generated a few confusing responses.

Paid Holiday means a general holiday for all the employees. Paid Leave means leave approved for an individual employee against an application and subject to eligibility rules and policies.

Dear all, neither the Factories Act nor the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act provide special provisions for paid leave for marriage. In any case, such leaves are granted from the employee's paid leave or as leave without pay if no paid leave is available, usually for up to two weeks. However, post-marriage, maternity paid leave is applicable (six weeks plus six weeks).

Recently, a few generous companies (e.g., IT/MNCs, etc.) have started offering special paid leave for marriage (one time only!) for up to a week as part of employee welfare measures, which is not mandatory. Nonetheless, it should be noted that once such leaves are provided as a policy, they cannot be withdrawn in the future as it falls under Section 9A of the Industrial Disputes Act.
