Understanding Social Security: Are Persons of Indian Origin Considered Expats or Indian Workers?

astralaw
Sir,

My query is in relation to the captioned subject matter. With regard to Indian workers (IW), could you please clarify whether a person of Indian origin (PIO) deployed to work in India should be considered as an expatriate/IW or treated as an Indian employee for the purpose of the social security scheme?

Thank you.

Dear Friend,

It depends on the country in which the employee is being deputed. If India has signed any agreement on social security with that country, then only the employee may get the benefits of the same.

An international worker is one who holds a passport issued by a foreign country. An OCI and PIO will hold a passport other than an Indian passport and hence shall be treated as an International Worker for coverage of EPF.
