How Will the New ESI Biometric Card Affect You and Your Family's Healthcare Access?

Dear All,

Recently, the ESI Corporation has introduced a Biometric card, which will be effective from August 2010.

Highlights of the Biometric card:

- All Insured Persons (IPs) will be issued two magnetic cards, one for the IP and the other for family members.
- A central database will be created with demographic and biometric details of IPs and their families.
- IPs and their family members can avail treatment in any ESI hospital or dispensary across India.
- Biometric details (fingerprints) will be used to verify and authenticate IPs and their families through card swipe.
- Employers can submit their return of contribution online.
- Employers can collect information on employees' benefits availed by respective employees online.
- One-time registration; Employees will carry forward the same set of cards every time they change employment.
- Duplication of enrollment.

Is dental treatment covered under the "ESIC" Act? Are medicines in ESI hospitals distributed free of charge? I am currently working in a factory for the last six months. Can I avail the benefit of the dispensary?
