Will My MBA Boost My Salary in Pharma? HR Pros, I Need Your Advice!

I am posting my question for the second time, so HR professionals, please help me with my query. I am a Science postgraduate working in a pharmaceutical company as a Quality Control Officer. Now, I have another degree, i.e., MBA (HR).

I would like to know if the HR department would consider me for a good salary increment because of this additional degree (MSc. + MBA) or not? Also, do you think an MBA in Operations Management would be more beneficial for me than an MBA in HR?

However, choosing to specialize in the field of pharmaceuticals can significantly boost your career progression and lead to a salary increase.

Kindly note the following:

1) Mere acquisition of an additional qualification will not fetch additional increments unless you are in government service/public sector companies. In government service/public sector, there are some additional increments available for passing specific degrees and department exams.

2) In the corporate sector, unless the additional qualification contributes directly to the working of the organization and unless the additional degree makes you take on extra responsibilities, it will definitely not result in additional increments.

Dear Neha,

Your additional MBA in HR will not add value to your current role as a Quality Control Officer or to your organization since this competency/skill/knowledge is not required for the job. It is unlikely that the company will increase your salary as a result.

However, look on the bright side - your additional qualification makes you more marketable.

I have just seen your question, and I don't know if it was already answered. But to me, if you have a first degree in science and now you get another degree, say in HR, there is no relation between the two degrees, and hence only one of them will be considered. That's my understanding of educational background and its impact on salary and benefits.

And do you think an MBA in Operations Management would be more beneficial than an MBA in HR for me? I don't think there is any point in discussing the above issue since you already have the degrees with you! What you can focus on is your passion or doing what you are best at! Just sharpen your skills. I don't think having two degrees really matters in the long run except for your CVs and visiting cards! :)

Having an additional qualification by pursuing a professional degree in Business Management will greatly impact your ideas and decision-making. As you are currently working for a Pharma Company, specifically as a QC Officer, having a management degree will serve as a stepping stone for your career.

If an additional degree helps you in better decision-making and adds value to your career, helping you and the company grow, it will definitely result in an increment or a better salary. However, having a degree that does not complement your first degree or your work experience will not take you anywhere.

Now, coming directly to your question – whether an additional degree will fetch you more money or not, it totally depends on your organization's policy. Most good private organizations want and encourage their employees to pursue further education. In the short run, you might not receive a direct monetary reward, but in the long run, it will definitely prove to be an asset for you. As you have completed an MBA in a different field than your current profile, I believe it will be a plus point for you. At the top management level, there is a desire for employees to have diverse knowledge and experience. You have to prove yourself and through your MBA, you have to add value to the organization. Remember, reading without reflection is like eating without digestion. So, through your hard work and dedication, you have to demonstrate to management that you not only possess an MBA degree but also a great deal of potential. Trust me, forget about HR; top management will seek you out.

Money is important, but learning is far more crucial. I believe when you enrolled for an MBA, your primary concern was to gain new knowledge. Now that you have achieved it, you must leverage what you have learned. The fundamentals of HR are not only beneficial for HR professionals but are also vital for all of us, regardless of our job profiles. Therefore, my friend, pursuing an MBA in HR is always advantageous.

Try to talk with management, take a shift in the HR Department. Only then will this degree work.
