Enhancing HR Skills: Which Short-Term Courses and Universities Boost Value?

Hi all,

Can somebody tell me what different courses HR professionals can take to enhance their value, both monetarily and qualification-wise? Which foreign universities offer good short-term courses for HR professionals to pursue after or before an MBA? How can one gain admission and what are the prerequisites?

I think that the best option would be to pursue an MBA from a reputed institute. Whether you choose to undertake any specialized courses before or after MBA depends on your inclination towards a particular industry or job. However, an MBA with excellent projects and efforts should be sufficient to kickstart a successful career.

I am in my final semester of PGDBM (MBA) HR. I also studied Office Management as a 3-year regular course during my college days. I have 5 years of experience in HR activities. Now, I would like to do a short-term course from a national or international institute or university to gain more knowledge about HR functions.

One more question: Is there any provision for pursuing a Doctorate Degree in HR? What is the highest qualification and what courses should one undertake to attain more knowledge? Whom should I contact and where?

I have an MBA but not in HR. I would like to tell you that I have joined a distance learning course at Welingkar Institute in Mumbai. You can also opt for this course as far as my knowledge is concerned.

Previously, I worked in a BPO as a CCE. However, I now have a keen interest in HR activities, which is why I have enrolled in this course. I am wondering how I can secure a job in HR. I have already applied on Naukri.com but have not received any response. What should I do? I am feeling very tense.

Engaging in a short-term course may not be ideal as it could clash with your final exams. Typically, short-term courses are aimed at updating your knowledge base. I believe that with an MBA, your knowledge base is already up to date. Instead, consider conducting research on a specific topic, writing a white paper, and getting it published. This achievement can be highlighted on your CV, significantly impacting your overall profile.

Regarding the short-term course, you could delay it for a couple of years until you feel the need to update yourself according to the changing scenario.

Inquiring about pursuing a Doctorate Degree in HR, most top universities offer doctoral programs in HR. A simple Google search should provide you with numerous institutes and universities offering such programs. For instance, MS University, Baroda, offers a PhD in HR.

Consider joining a BPO/ITES/IT company in International Sales. Establish a good relationship with the HR head and apply directly when a relevant HR position becomes available. This approach should be effective, especially if you can demonstrate a strong aptitude and interest in HR functions.

Alternatively, explore opportunities with HR consultants as they might assist you in securing interviews.

I would like to thank you for your suggestion. Do you mean I should enter BPO/ITES as CCE and then have a good rapport with the HR manager? Whenever there is a vacancy, should I request them for that? But if you have already worked as CCE, they may not consider you as an HR person in the same organization. This happened with one of my friends. I have no connections in HR as I am an outstation person. Could you guide me on how I can learn practical things in HR? I am in the learning stage, but I am determined to enter the HR field.
