Can Playing Soft Music in the Workplace Boost Productivity? Share Your Thoughts!

Jaya Chandran
I would like to implement playing soft instrumental music in my factory production floor, canteen, and office during specific times. Will it help to improve productivity? Please send your suggestions.

That's a tough one.

In my experience of delivering MBTI programs, Extraverts may prefer external stimuli such as music as background noise, creating a more social environment, while Introverts may prefer an environment free from distractions. As an Introvert, I quite enjoy background noise, and similarly, some Extraverts don't like it.

For me, anything that helps to create a fun environment and increases motivation also increases performance. I might recommend simply asking those with whom you work what they think. Perhaps try it out and observe the results you get.

My mind also raises the following questions:
- By how much do you want to increase productivity?
- What are the current barriers to increased productivity?

Enjoy experimenting.

I do not know about productivity. But one thing for sure, it will create an enjoyable experience! There will be something more soothing to hear rather than just the shrill and monotonous sounds heard from machines! You can definitely have music in the afternoon that is peppy and can invigorate the people! Moreover, you can ask the factory workers to list their favorite songs/music that they enjoy and create a compilation of it! It will really boost morale! Go ahead...let them sway to the groove! Certainly! Here is the corrected and formatted text:

Of course, Jaya,

Just go ahead and implement the same and ensure you have enough stock of instrumental music. Times Group has already done that many years ago. Just do that...

I hope this revision meets your expectations.

Hi Jaya,

You will get different feedback, and finally, everybody says that it's good. But please maintain a proper sound system with low volume. Initially, start with only one hour on weekends. Take feedback from senior team members and then proceed further. It's a good idea. Go ahead and experiment. All the best.

Hi Jaya,

Of course, I feel that music will increase productivity. It's like when we go to the gym, and if the music is on, we tend to achieve more than we normally do. It creates a fun element in the surroundings. However, it could be great if you could take the suggestions of the employees too. Again, it depends on the individual, mood swings, and the type of job, etc.

No... we have applied it and now stopped. It did not work out. It only created noise and did not provide calmness and relaxation. So, everyone agreed not to play music even though it was so melodious, soft, and not too loud.

My suggestion is that employees may be distracted. It may so happen that while enjoying their favorites, they may commit mistakes that could hamper production. However, you may allow it only during lunch or dinner times in the office canteen, or you can create a relaxation room for those who want to listen to music for a while and take a break.

Hi, it will improve a lot in a professional setup. Music turns all negative feelings towards positive feelings. When time passes, you never know; if you are free, it is more enjoyable. Pleasant moods increase productivity, and it is one of the tools of the art of living. Now, it has to apply all over the working environment. If it is old songs and soft music that stimulate me during my working hours, I sit, enjoy, and relax.
