Is there any difference between Earned Leave and Privilege Leave?

Thank you.

There is a difference between Earned Leave (EL) and Privilege Leave (PL). Earned Leave is applicable at the factory as per the Factories Act. Leave earned by each and every employee of a factory for every 20 days of work done by him/her is called Earned Leave. An employee who joins a factory has to work a minimum of 240 days, and only then is eligible for EL.

Privilege Leave is dealt with in other Shops & Establishments. Based on my knowledge and experience (25 years), Earned Leave should be applicable at factories (15 days in a year maximum for those who join on 1st Jan, and for others who join later in the year, eligibility for EL is on a pro-rata basis), while other institutions may follow Privilege Leave.

I hope you understood the point.

Thanks,

Dear Vandana Singh,

There is no difference between EL and PL; both are the same, like Medical Leave and Sick leave.

There is no difference between Earned Leave and Privilege Leave. Some companies call it Earned Leave (EL) while others refer to it as Privilege Leave (PL).

There is not much difference between the two, only conventional usage. However, PL/EL is calculated as one day for every 11 days worked, and all other leaves are deducted from such days for calculation except CL. Thus, a person can have a maximum of 33 days provided one has not gone on leave or been absent from the office for any number of days barring availing CL.

The Factories Act provides for Annual Leave with wages at 1 day for every 20 days worked. Normally, factories refer to it as earned leave, while government offices refer to it as privilege leave. The difference lies in terminology, but for all intents and purposes, it is the same.
