Feeling Lost After My MBA in HR: How Do I Choose the Right Career Path?

vinutha b
Hi friends,

I have completed my MBA in HR in July 2009. I am totally confused about which is the right job to start off my career in HR. I was working for a consultancy as a recruiter, and I was not very satisfied with the job. Then, I joined as a training coordinator in a small manufacturing company. I'm not sure if I am in the right job. Kindly give me your suggestions on how a fresher should go about choosing the right job during the initial stages of their career.

Thank you!

Dear Vinu,

This is the time when you can learn so many things. Try to aim for a generalist profile to work on, whether in a big company or a small one, because this profile will be the same for all companies.

Best of luck.

I agree with Ms. Sarita. You should look for an opening with any small or big industry where you will have exposure to the entire HR gamut. It doesn't matter if you need to prepare and maintain all the activities on your own. It would be a great learning opportunity for you. Just to share with you, when I started my career, I used to handle the time office, fill in all statutory challans, prepare various MIS as asked, etc., which helped me in the long term to strengthen my understanding.

I agree with our friend's point. You can learn many things from a small company by taking some initiative. Training is also a part of HR activity, so don't worry about this. At the same time, you can engage in other HR-related activities on your own. If there are no HR-related responsibilities, you have to create and work on them.

Dear all,

Thank you for your suggestions! Currently, I am doing database entry work, and I am feeling disappointed because my MBA seems to be of no use now. :-(

Dear Vinu,

Don't lose your hope. Start searching for HR profiles and keep looking on different HR sites. Can you confirm if you have completed your MBA on a regular basis or through distance mode?

Thank you.

Ya, I have been doing that. I hope I get a good job in which I'm satisfied. Anyways, thank you, Sarita, so kind of you to have taken interest in replying to my queries. Thanks a lot, Sarita.

Sure, I will do that. Can you just tell me which area needs to be selected? Should I go for recruitment, training and development, generalist, or compensation? I worked for a consultancy for 3 months and found that there are no growth prospects in consultancies, so I left the job. Now, I am working as a training coordinator but mainly doing database entry work. Thank you.
