Considering an MSW After PGD-HRM: Will It Boost My HR Career Prospects?

I have completed PGD-HRM through distance learning from NMIMS and have been working as a recruiter for the past two and a half years. It seems that my PG course has not been very beneficial in securing a better job. I am considering pursuing an MSW as I have noticed that many individuals with an MSW have achieved success in the HR field.

Can someone please suggest whether pursuing an MSW will help me out (preferably through distance learning as I am working full-time)? Also, could someone recommend a university that offers an MSW program through distance learning?

Distance Learning Dilutes Education and Learning

There is a crazy rush to get degrees everywhere. Everybody wants to add degrees after degrees. Masters and now Doctorate are also available through distance learning. One needs to introspect and satisfy oneself as to whether he/she acquired real knowledge or only added one more degree to his/her name. Moreover, what is the use of adding such degrees? No wise employer is going to give any recognition or weightage to such degrees.

As the quality of education, faculty, and evaluation, even in the case of many full-time programs, is suspect and deplorable, it is further diluted in distance learning.

Everybody should strive to get quality education and not merely a degree. One should check and recheck the credentials of the institute/university and program before enrolling.

MSW is a generic course offering opportunities in various fields like HR, legal, social services, etc. If you want to make your career in HR with a generalist profile, I would recommend you to go for MSW. Some universities offering full-time MSW are Sardar Patel University - Department of Social Work, VV Nagar, Gujarat; MS University - Faculty of Social Work, Baroda; and Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. Part-time MSW is not preferable; at least, I would not recommend it to you. I am also an MSW and currently working with an MNC in Daman. So, just go for it. MSW is a good course in comparison to MBA or any post-graduation diploma courses because it provides a wide range of knowledge.

The Fieldwork is on 2 days a week, and the internships and Block Placements provide the students with optimum exposure.

I did my MSW specializing in HRM from Madras Christian College (Chennai) affiliated with Madras University. This is one of the premier institutes. The main pioneering school is the Madras School of Social Work. The edge is the faculty; MSW is hardcore experiential study involving Rural Camp. The real advantage would be to do this full-time college like MCC, to get equipped to face the industry. MSW also gives a unique perspective in counseling, casework, group work, and FGD. After 2 years, you'll discover a real and better you.

I have completed my MSW from Punjab. I suggest you go for the regular program because the exposure you receive will not be the same in distance learning. While it is a good degree, it would be even better if you obtain it from a renowned university. What are your thoughts on pursuing an MBA? MBA has just been marketed well. I find it rather hyped by every other college in the neighborhood calling themselves a management institute and offering an MBA.

But for those who have committed themselves to obtaining an MSW like Satnam and me, we know its true value.

We really learn tangible management concepts from an MSW like a specialization in Human Resource Management. Social Work views Business and its related activities under its domain, and this is how it should be!

Business now views Social Work as mere Corporate Social Responsibility and a way to promote its so-called Brand Value and satisfy theirs and the shareholders' consciousness. This proposition has brought about a crisis like the current economic downturn.

The attitude of grabbing and consuming and making more profits is the absolute aim of most MBAs. But recognizing the community and people around us makes a great visible and most powerful invisible differences.

Neither MBA nor MSW or for that matter any degree is bad, provided you study from reputed institute / college. All the institutes print glossy brochures with lot of imaginary content. When it comes to delivering they are big zero. They do not have infrastructure, good faculty and industry interface to give students right exposure.

Obtaining degree should not be the aim but to obtain real knowledge and practical exposure. Choose only such institute with good standing to pursue your studies. Mind you, you will have to come really good to get admission in reputed institutes and will have to compete with brilliant students to get admission and to complete the studies.

I agree with Mr. Ivan Antony John that, MBA course is hyped up and it is being offered by every institute and college round the corner like any ordinary degree and that is why it is diluted and lost its value.MSW is also offered by many institutes and there is also a big variation in quality standards. Mr. Ivan Antony John has done his MSW from a very reputed institution like Madras Christian College (Chennai), that's why he got such a good exposure and knowledge but unfortunately majority institutes are selling only cheap, substandard degrees at a very high price.
